Angela,
I see this question almost every day- I posted this to the message board a couple of days ago.
RECENT POST-OPS AND SOON TO BE POST-OPS
You MAY have these some or all of these symptoms AFTER your surgery:
1. PAIN - Some people breeze through the surgery, saying that previous procedures they had were much worse. Most people hurt alot. Expect pain, and be sure to demain pain management from the hospital staff. If you aren't getting what you need when you ask for it in the hospital after repeated requests- have a family or friend advocate for you. Pain will continue when you go home and may continue for weeks after. Unexplained increases in pain should be followed up with your doctor.
2. ALTERED TASTE OR APPETITE - Beverages (even water!) and food can taste odd or just plain disgusting. Part of this is related to the anesthesia in your system, and these symptoms may last up to 2 months after your procedure. Things will begin to taste more normal in time, but don't be surprised that some of your old favorites don't have the same appeal.
3. DEPRESSION - again this is related to anesthesia (see #2 above) and this can happen to people who have never suffered it before. Depend on your support network even more at this time, and get help if you find you cannot cope.
3. HEAD HUNGER and/or FOOD GRIEF - You cannot eat the way you used to- this is why you chose this surgery. Food, a great coping mechanism has been taken away from you along with parts of your stomach. Your brain was not operated on- and you will have to deal with finding another coping strategy to replace your food. Seek out new nurturing ways to soothe yourself.
4. PLATEAUS - The scale will be both your friend and your enemy. If you can bear it, give away your scale and weigh yourself only at your doctor. Plateaus can happen at any time, and without any reason. Combat this by using other gauges of success. Take your picture pre-op or immediately post-op and regularly after. Can't stand your picture taken? Measure yourself instead, and again regularly. Before you freak out that the scale hasn't budged or worse, gone up a pound or two, compare your non-scale progress and LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. If you are following your doctors instructions- YOU WILL LOSE AGAIN!
Remember everyone one is different- I hope that your WLS journey is smooth and you are happy.
