The Beginning of My Journey
Nov 17, 2006
I am 44 years old and have been overweight for most of my life. I said that I'd never have gastric bypass surgery, but after working with someone who had the surgery, and seeing my sister-in-law and other co-workers be successful, I have decided this is the route for me. I'm ready to live the life the God intended for me to live.

I quit smoking today! I prayed that God would take away the desire to smoke.

I AM APPROVED!! I am scheduled for my consult with my surgeon on January 16th.
I was required to do a 6-month doctor supervised diet. I had to complete an endoscopy, cardio consult with stress test, pulmonology consult with sleep study and CAT scan, psych evaluation, blood work. I was approved on the first submission.
I am excited but nervous, too. My parents, family and friends are very supportive of me. A few people that I have told at work are also very supportive.

I saw my surgeon on Monday, January 16th. My surgery is scheduled for April 18, 2006. Two weeks before the surgery, I have to go on all protein drinks and liquids. The surgeon wants me to lose some weight before the surgery so my liver will be smaller. I'm not very happy about this; however, doing this before surgery will be good preparation for the all liquid stage right after surgery. I have a little less than three months to stop drinking caffeine and to get my home in order.
Also, I am a non-smoker for four months now! God has truly blessed me in this area. He took away the desire for cigarettes. It truly has been a miracle. I've also crocheted quite a few items to keep my hands busy.

I had my pre-op testing done today and met with the cardiologist and anesthesiologist. All systems are go. I start two weeks of liquids tomorrow. I told my mom tonight that this must be what I'm supposed to do because I was surprised I was not emotional over the fact that today was the last day of food for awhile. My weight today was 328 (down 4 pounds from a week ago).

Two weeks of clear liquids is almost over and surgery day is almost here. God has been so good to me--I have not been hungry hardly at all and have not struggled with not eating. Had a bad day yesterday and the day before--trying to get things done at work and at home. But I made it through. Will be spending the weekend with family. I'm so thankful I have a supportive family and parents that are able to care for me afterwards.

It's the day before my surgery and the oh-so-famous bowel prep day! Sure not looking forward to this. God has brought me this far, He will be with me the rest of the way! Not too nervous yet today; I'm sure tomorrow will be different. I'm so thankful for my family and my church. Everyone has been so supportive. See you on the losin' side!!
