"The first thing Dr. Peters said to me was "I'm going to be candid with you -- I don't sugar-coat anything!" That's exactly what I needed to hear -- a doctor who puts all the cards on the table. He is upfront and honest about the possible risks and complications. He told me that I will be making the ultimate choice about which surgery to have (he does VBG, RNY and DS). I liked him instantly, because he was telling me the truth, and not just what he thought I wanted to hear. I've seen him twice (once with my husband) and I went to his support group as well. There were 50 people in the room, and every one of them (pre, post and non-op)has nothing but respect and affection for him. His wife/assistant Robbie is also terrific -- she's very sensitive and caring, and quite reassuring about my concerns (particularly regarding insurance). Regarding aftercare, his comment was "I'm yours, whenever you need me". He makes himself available 24/7 to his post-ops, responds very quickly to emails and phone calls, and will not be operating on me until he's sure I know EVERYTHING about my surgery (he gives a written test to check knowledge level). Overall, I think he's the best kind of surgeon there is. If you're looking for someone to pat you on the hand and say, "Everything's going to be fine", forget it. If you want the truth, and are planning to make an investment in your own future, he's the man! As for surgical competence or bedside manner, I can't yet say, but I think they're both important aspects of this process. However, I believe that surgical competence edges out bedside manner in the big picture. I'd rather be operated on by a fine surgeon with a brusque bedside manner than someone who's all sweetness and light, but not on the right page, surgically. "
