Mount Carmel Bariatric Center

"My only problem with Mt. Carmel was with a couple of nurses on 7 Tower. Margaret was short-tempered with me and while I was under her care I felt like I had to wait for a long time for pain meds. Thank goodness I wasn't under her care long! My body didn't respond well to the morphine, and no matter how much I tried to explain that the meds weren't working, I couldn't get anyone to listen. It wasn't until the night of my third day that my veins started collapsing and they finally started giving me oral medications. That was when I actually started getting pain relief. But don't let this put a black mark on Mt. Carmel's record. I had MANY WONDERFUL nurses while I was there (Nikki, I LOVE you!) and the physical therapist was so motivating that I can't imagine going through the surgery without her. Overall, my experience there was very good."

Marie Pinto

"She may be a very good dietitian for general needs, but she is not very helpful for bariatric patients. Don't listen to a word she says! Your doctor will give you all the info you need."

Timothy Custer

" My new surgeon is Dr. Timothy Custer in Columbus, OH. My first impression was, "Oh my goodness, he's not much older than me!" Once I got over the shock, I was struck by how easy he was to talk to and how he seemed to be genuinely interested in my case. He talked with me for 40 minutes and NEVER made me feel rushed. As a matter of fact, he got two pages while he was in with me and he didn't even look at his pager. He just reached down and hit the button to silence it. Wow! It's nice to know the doc isn't just trying to rush on to the next patient. I honestly cannot think of a single thing that I disliked about Dr. Custer. He spent a great deal of time talking about the surgical options and why, in my case, he preferred to do open instead of lap. He said he'd leave the decision up to me, though, and if I wanted to have it done lap then he'd give it a try. He also put to rest all of the rumors I've been hearing about having to be off work 6 weeks if I have it open. He said, baring complications, there's no reason to believe that I'd need to be off longer than 3 weeks. That's all I needed to hear! I chose to go with the open surgery and can't wait to hear from him with a date! Dr. Custer's office staff were very pleasant and easy-going. Keri is an absolute jewel! I simply cannot get over how different this office is from the doctor's office that I originally chose. It scares me to think that I was so desperate for the surgery that I was willing to let that other office treat me poorly. Dr. Custer was very emphatic about the importance of getting into a support group and he drives the point home by REQUIRING at least one visit before surgery to get to know everyone. His office runs the meeting the first Monday of every month on the Mt. Carmel West campus. I'm looking forward to becoming a member! I think both surgical competence and bedside manner are qualities this surgeon exhibits. I asked about his mortality and morbidity rates and asked him specifically what kinds of problems he most runs into. I was happy to hear that he and his partner have tweaked their routines to give better results, even though it may not be the "routine" way of doing the operation. It makes me feel like he's actively trying to find newer and better ways of doing the surgery instead of going along with the "same old thing." Dr. Custer has been, so far, wonderful to work with. I'll post more after my surgery! "
