David: Congratulations on your wls journey. I enjoyed reading your progress. I am also 57 years old and scheduled for Nov 19th. I was scheduled for August 8th, but failed my pre-op physical due to high hemoglobin and hematocrit (red blood cells)> The surgery that I haven/t had yet probably saved my life as I didn't know that I had this problem and was in serious danger of stroke, heart attack, or blood clots. They have been removing blood faster than my body can make it, so my levels are down enough where I can have my surgery. I retired from the Navy in 1983, lived in Virginia Beach, out by Pat Robertsons campus, the Stumpy Lake golf course area. I was planning on going there for a reunion on Sep 29th, but my Dr. doesn't want me to sit in a car that long and I don't fly anymore. Enjoy your self in beautiful Virginia Beach. 11/5/01: It has been two months exactly since my surgery and I am down 62 pounds. BMI has gone from 49 to 39. I have energy that I never thought possible. I work out at a local gym 4 times a week. I get sound, uninterrupted sleep every night and wake up refreshed. The big struggle is to make sure I eat enough protein. Before 9/5 I was pretty much a carnivore (If God hadn't wanted us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?). Now I would rather get my protein from roasted soy nuts, low fat cottage cheese and skimmed milk. I don't like the protein supplements, liquid or so called candy bars. My wife and I enjoy nights out to restaurants and we have learned to ask for one order of fajitas, or fish, or a chinese dish. Even then we usually take home a doggy bag. I confess to the occasional wish to take in an all-you-can-eat restaurant but the sight of my new found collar bones dissuade me. My son said something profound that I now try to live by. He said that nothing tastes better than being thin feels! Since the surgery I have become very aware of how TV advertising is not only always pushing food but everything must be "biggysized" or "jumbo" or "supersized". I saw one the other day in which the pizza company was offering free bread sticks with the giant pizza. I think I now know why obesity is epidemic in America. What a change for a guy who used to be able to put a chinese buffet out of business in one sitting. Hello to all my 9/5 operation mates. I hope you all feel as good about what we did as I do. Today is exactly one month since my Lap-RNY at Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA. I have lost exactly 50 pounds and 8 inches of waistline. The experience has been a good one although I never want to see another cup of chicken broth or glass of Crystal light. I am now eating small quantities of solids but stop immediately when I feel full. I went to my PCP today to get blood work done and told him I was suffering from lightheadedness, particularly when I stand up. He told me I was probably suffering from low blood pressure and discontinuted my Hyzaar immediately because my fasting pressure this morning was 122/72. I don't think I had a reading that low when I was 21 years old. Best wishes to all my fellow September 5th alumni. I hope you are all enjoying the descent as much as I am!

David, I'm impressed. Just a few days out of surgery and you are home and posting on the board. Sounds like you have made it this far in great shape!! Wishing you a continued uneventful recouperation period. Keep us posted. Pam K

Wanted everybody to know that after three uneventful days in the hospital I am home and there is no place like it. The surgery was fine and the recuperation relatively pain free so far. I have a lot of pain in my knees from my artheritis and the fact that I have not had my NSAID for a week. I have been using this site to educate myself for months but never posted. Now that I have the fun part behind me I have one word of advice to those contemplating this life altering decision. Learn all you can about the surgery and listen to everybody but at the end of the day, make sure that the only person involved in the decision is you. When I was wheeled into that operating room last Wednesday I was surrounded by people but I was totally alone with my decision. God bless you one and all.
