Alexian Brothers Medical Center (COE)

"I was in ICU the first night. The nurses were like angels. I felt safe and secure, relatively free of pain and my family was kept up to date and made to feel welcome. The other floor I went to was used to RNY patients that continued the good feeling. I had some GREAT nurses."

James M. Kane Sr.

"My surgeon is Dr. Kane Jr.,son of Dr. Kane Sr. They are affiliated with the Weight For Life Program. I found them by reading about a seminar at a local hospital. The seminar, given by Dr. Kane Jr. was excellent. It covered everything from facts about the surgery itself to how to go about dealing with insurance companies (in this case done by the Weight for Life team ) and also had former patients speak about their experiences and answer questions. After being approved by my PPO, I started the comprehensive testing required to see if I was a suitable candidate. This is coordinated by the Weight for Life Program. I visited with Dr.Kane who came highly recommended by friends and found him to be very thorough, personable and knowledgeable. He took lots of time to answer questions. I had a psycological testing done and saw Dr. Hart, a pulmonary specialist who helps to manage the after-care. He went into great detail about the complications that can occur, especially since I turned fifty in August. We also discussed the injections to thin my blood I would need to give myself at home. During the sleep test he ordered I discovered I had sleep apnea. At first all my enthusiasm started to diminish. I was scared and started to get discouraged about the surgery but I realized later how important it is to fully understand the seriousness of the surgery and the comittment on my part it would involve. I went through with the stress test Dr. Hart ordered and attended the required support group meeting despite my reservations. This was SO helpful. The first part of the session I listened to people who had already had the procedure. Then they opened the meeting for questions newcomers had. I happened to sit next to a nurse who worked on the unit that as a new surgical patient I would be placed on. She was there to prepare for surgery also and highly endorsed Dr. Kane and his team. As a former nurse THAT impressed me!! I went home feeling calm and my enthusiasm returned. I realized that I would be a member of a team of dedicated people there to try to help me get healthy. My surgery is scheduled for Nov.30th,2001 and yes, I am still nervous, but feel that I will be in good hands, capable and caring, the best I can find. Best of luck to all, those who have already undergone the surgery and those of you who are still contemplating it...."
