There is some bad feelings between the surgeries. The RNY folks feel that the DS folks have taken the easy way out, because the DS have no dumping like the RNY folks do. If you get hold of some good info, you'll find that the odds are better for the morbid obese with a DS.It gives you a greater chance of losing more and also for keeping it off. That causes some resentment.DS folks can drink with their meals and don't have to chew their food to the consistency of applesauce. The RNY is a good surgery as is the DS. You have to chose what is best for you personally. Good luck. Leslie

Tonya, I see you live in KC, I know many ppl work for the Railroad, like my husband, but here in CA. We have Unitedhealth care and I was approved no problem. If your husband has the same employer, there is a mistake. Call them up, it's happened before. There is no exclusion for this surgery. Best of Luck. Happiness..

Hi Tonya! I saw your post asking about biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, AKA "BPD/DS", or simply "duodenal switch" for short! This is the procedure that my doctor has recommended for me. It is the most "invasive" of all the weight loss surgeries, but also has the best record of success for the morbidly obese. It is a "refinement" or "updated" version of the basic gastric bypass, but what makes it different is that they leave the pyloris valve and the duodenum intact, which prevents "dumping" syndrome (yay!), and reduces the risk of ulceration. My doctor (my PCP) said that while the "RNY" or "Roux en Y" procedure USED TO BE the "gold standard" for weight loss surgery, the BPD/DS is now considered to be the best. I am convinced that it is the operation for me. Do you know how to do a "Google search"? If you simply type in "duodenal switch" it will bring up BUNCHES of information. One website that I found to be especially informative is called the "Duodenal Switch Information Zone" and you can find it at "http://www.duodenalswitch.com". Another site that I found has an "animated" diagram of the procedure, which is the best I have found to show exactly what is done in this surgery. It is on a doctor's website, at "http://www.johnhusted.com/switch.htm". When you bring up the "homepage" on the John Husted, MD site, scroll down a bit and you'll see a diagram of the operation. Below the diagram there is a step-by-step explanation of the procedure, steps "A" thru "F". Just below "F" it says (in bold letters) "To view an animation of this procedure CLICK HERE." Click on that. A smaller window will pop up, and after a moment or two you will see an "animation" of what is done in this procedure. I found this animation VERY helpful in trying to understand exactly WHAT is done and why it works. I hope this information will help you. Good luck to you!
