Donna, First of all congrats to you on moving forward with your surgery. In a few short days it will be history and you will be ready to begin living. On the breathing stuff...if you are a smoker then it can hurt to breathe after any surgery. Not something that is horribly painful but discomfort. Because you are taking in air from the gut (where your insides were rearranged) you will feel some soreness. It is not enough though to keep you from taking a deep breath. Use your pillow on your tummy before you begin the breathing treatments if that is what your doctor orders for you. Also, if you have a PCP you can give yourself a boost prior to a breathing treatmtent. Don't let anything that you read freak you out. Each person has a different expereince to pain and what they can tolerate. If you do find yourself hitting the panic mode make sure that your surgeon has an order for the nurses prior to surgery for a medication that works for you. Best of wishes to you. KimmieTN

Hi there! In answer to your question, the not being able to breathe part really scared me too. The day I came home from surgery, I felt like I couldn't draw in full breaths, like there was a sharp pain in my chest. I quickly called my surgeon and they informed me that certain people have to deal with the "sharp breath" feeling because of the rib retractor they have to use to hold you open during surgery. I started to panic, but kept reminding myself that the feeling was normal, and just as my surgeon said, it got better within a week. I no longer feel it at all, and I'm 2 months post-op. I've lost 67lbs and feel great. I hope you have great success too! We'll be praying for you! Blessings!

Hi Donna, I saw you posted a message (question) on the message board about distal vs. Proximal. From my understanding it is based on a persons pre op weight. You say at btc they bypass 200 cm? Myself for instance - I weigh 292 and will have 100 cm bypassed. I thought 150 + is considered distal with 75 cm being proximal. My surgeon said it is really based on your weight. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.
