Randy Haluck

"I wasn't quite sure after our 1st meeting. He impressed me with his knowledge and intensity but I wasn't sure if he'd have patience with me during my bouts of emotion. I could not have been more wrong. Friends advised me to let him see that side of me at our next meeting. Then I could see if I was comfortable with him. At the 2nd meeting, despite the probability that he might not schedule my surgery that day, I let it all out. He listened compassionately to my thoughts, fears and observations. He validated my feelings and easied my fears with his accepting manner and honest discussion. He said we should wait on scheduling a surgery date. I was disappointed at first but then he actually thanked me for being honest and said that he wished more people would do so. He stressed that my being honest really helps him use his physician skills, in addition to his surgeon skills, to treat me and my obesity. He let it up to me when to talk again. We did so three weeks later. I'm ready and we scheduled a date. I have every confidence in him and Hershey Medical Center program. They are already doing all the recommendations I see in other WLS materials and sites. Support groups, nutritionists, the most effective procedures and they build in time to think and process info and emotions between spaced out appts. I thought I was ready in June. I had researched it, thought hard about it and came to a decision. But now I'm glad they built in that thinking time. I've processed through the risks, practiced post-op behaviors and had time to build a larger network of support. "
