Richard Thirlby

"I've had my first consultation with Dr. Thirlby at Virginia Mason, and I have to say it wasn't what I expected. He seems very nice, but really laid back about this procedure. He did mention the complications of having surgery, but did not say much about post-op complications. He kind of glossed over dumping syndrome, and the effects of malabsorption. If I hadn't been researching this procedure for months now, I really wouldn't have found out much. He did give me a hand out explaining the procedure and some of the complications. Perhaps he felt that I was already well informed because I mentioned that I *had* been researching for a long time and that I had read his webpage. Anyway, it was a very quick meeting and he explained that he prefers the proximal rny over more malabsorptive surgeries, which is fine with me. I kind of expected him to ask me more about my diet history, etc. But I gave most of that info to his resident. His other patients seem to think that he is a good surgeon and he seems to know what he's doing so I'm not uncomfortable. Although I still feel like I'm in limbo because the way he left it was that he would submit a letter of medical neccesity to my insurance co and see what they say. The end. Well I know what they're going to say, they're going to say no. I kind of wanted to know what he does in the case that they do say no. If he just says OK they don't cover it so no surgery for you, or has he successfully fought for an appeal and won."
