Edwin Gaar

"Met with Dr. Gaar on 11/22/00. While waiting for my appointment, I ran into an old friend (Mary B) - 3 weeks post-op. She recommended Dr. Gaar highly.
Dr. Earl Gaar - an extremely down-to-earth and realistic person - has a WYSIWYG approach. I felt comfortable with him - he made sure I understood one point before going to the next - I like that. He kept asking if I had any questions, but, I had done a great deal of research in order to discuss this with my PCP, thus, I didn't have many questions. Additionally, I had been to a Right Weigh seminar and felt that I was fairly well informed.
He told me straight up that if I was doing this in order to get on the cover of Vogue Magazine to forget it!! Just was not going to happen.
He is very open about risk factors, things that could happen during and after surgery - did not promise me that I would lose an ounce, but said that most people lost about 80% of their excess weight in about 9-12 months. Hey - The bottom line - just what bankers want to hear.
Susan is great! A very busy woman, but a super person. Whenever I call - even though I hate to bother her, she always answers my questions. She can be somewhat blunt, which can make her seem unfriendly over the phone. She got a little short with my mother when she called in about my nausea two days after leaving the hospital, but I'm hoping she was just having a bad day.
I did have to wait a while for the 1st appointment - but I suppose that is normal for a city the size of Louisville. Plus, there aren't that many surgeons that are doing this type of surgery here. I only know of three or four and one is in the process of retiring, so I consider myself lucky.
Overall - I'd give an 9 points out of 10.
I'm not sure of what the aftercare involves other than following instructions to the letter; however, I do know that there are support group meetings on the last Tuesday of each month at Norton Medical Pavillion that anyone may attend who is considering or has had WLS. The meeting room is reserved from 7 - 9 PM with the meeting officially starting at 7:30 PM. If you would like more information - please e-mail me.
Post- Surgery Update: --- Dr. Gaar was terrific in the hospital, stopped by each afternoon to check on me. I had a slight problem on Friday after surgery while in recovery - Dr. Gaar CAME back to the hospital to order tests and so forth. I think he's a HERO! "
