3 Days Post-Op

Jun 01, 2010

I am sleeved!!!  Today is the first day that I can say I am feeling a lot better.  Yesterday I was discharged from the hospital and probably would have been fine if it wasn't a 12 hour car ride home.  But we made it safe and sound and I am feeling much better today.  I have not had any nausea, but I know they were giving me anti-nausea meds in the hospital.  The gas pains were tough but are mostly gone now.  I am now dealing with a persistent headache that the dr says is probably due to lack of carbs, so he said to drink more juice and that seems to be helping.  I do have to say that I never thought apple juice would taste so good as it did this morning!

Dr. Alvarez and his team were all amazing.  I had a very good experience and everything has gone exactly as planned.  I did have my gallbladder taken out at the same time, so I have an extra incision or two, but my recovery has not been any more difficult than my mom's who was sleeved by Dr. Alvarez the same day.  I am so glad to have taken this step in my life and I am ready to transform myself in to a much healthier person!

The Countdown is On! 22 Days!!

May 07, 2010

Three weeks from today I will be on my way to Mexico to get my sleeve!!!!  I am so excited!  One by one, I have been crossing things off my "to do before surgery" list.  I've been hitting my favorite restaurants one last time, getting my financing arranged, getting my vitamins & protein figured out, etc.

My husband is very supportive of me getting this surgery.  One thing we have been discussing is that usually when we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to try out new restaurants.  Yes, food has often been our "entertainment".  So we've been contemplating about what to replace that with.  So we have decided to take up golf!  He used to really enjoy golfing, but hasn't played in years, and I have never done anything more than putt putt, but I am excited about learning!  We figured that it would be something fun to do when we travel and get some exercise and fresh air while we're at it!  I am also thinking that a ballroom dancing class would be a lot of fun, but he isn't convinced on that one yet.   ;)   Both of those are things that I wouldn't really feel comfortable doing (or have much energy for) at my current size, but I am really looking forward to them now!!

I am getting my gallbladder removed at the same time as my VSG surgery, because I have already been having gallbladder attacks for the past year and a half.  But I've been having this irrational nagging fear that he is going to forget to take out my gallbladder.  I cannot imagine how much worse the attacks would get with quick weight loss!  That thing has GOT to go!!  I'll probably still be reminding them as they wheel me to the OR!

Surgery Date Moved Up!

Mar 31, 2010

Well, due to some scheduling conflicts that my mom had, we have moved our surgery up about a week to May 29th!  I am getting so excited, and it seems closer than ever!  I have been trying a few different protein supplements to try to get an idea of what I like.  I bought a couple of bullet-like protein "shots" (43g) and they are so thick, it is like drinking snow cone syrup.  However, it was pretty good to pour half of one into a bottle of water and drink it that way.  I also ordered the sampler pack of Syntrax nectar and have tried about 3 of those flavors so far.  I like the strawberry kiwi the best.  The green apple was pretty good too, but I didn't really care for the Caribbean Cooler.  It tasted like coconut and I just don't really like coconut.  I still need to get some vitamins figured out, and I need my passport to arrive.  So I feel like I have a lot still to do to prepare, but really it's not too much.  Skinny-me, here I come!

Surgery Date Scheduled!

Mar 02, 2010

I am going to have my gastric sleeve surgery on June 4th, 2010!  Sent in my deposit yesterday.  It seems like awhile but I know it will fly by.  I still have some things to work on before then such as researching more information about protein supplementation, and doing some toning exercises to try to tighten up my skin even before the surgery.  My mom is going with me and will also be having her surgery the same day.  We are going to Dr. Alvarez in Piedras Negras, Mexico.  In addition to the VSG procedure, I will also be having my gallbladder removed at the same time.  I have been having problems with gallstones for a little over a year now and it needs to come out anyway.  I am excited about the future!!

PCP Green Light!

Feb 15, 2010

I had my appointment with my PCP today and brought up WLS for the first time.  She was very supportive!  She said I clearly meet the criteria and her main concern was that I have done my research and that I realize the hurdles of getting insurance to pay for it.  She is even ok with me going to Mexico for it, as long as I do my research and check out the facility and surgeon beforehand.  She said she will order any labs or tests needed before I go down there and will adjust my blood pressure meds as necessary afterward.  I was afraid she was going to try to talk me out of it, but apparently she has had a lot of patients do it and understands the benefits.  She spent a lot of time talking to me about the psychological adjustments after surgery.  Not so much about changing my relationship with food, but more about how people will treat me differently.  Sounds like she speaks from close experience!  Anyway, now that I have her green light, I am ready to start my paperwork and apply for my passport!
