In June of 2005 I went in for a routine physical exam. I had several things listed on a note pad to discuss with my physician, gastric by-pass surgery was one of them but after discussing several other topics with her I decided not to mention it. Much to my surprise my physician brought it up herself. Since Diabetes is prevalent in my family, (both my parents were diabetics) she suggested I consider this surgery to cut this horrible disease off at the pass. Little did we know that my lab work that day would come back indicating that I was already a diabetic. I also received several other referrals to follow up with other aspects of my health. I was also diagnosed at that time with High blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, GERD and of course the diabetes. So I immediately changed my diet and started taking Gloucophage among other medications. I researched the Gastric by-pass surgery and decided to move forward with this. I had my laparoscopic BP surgery on 3/7/06 which by coincidence was my late mother’s birthday. I am today, (4/7/06) one month post op. I feel great and have dropped 25 pounds since the surgery for a total of 77 lost. I had lost 52 pounds on my own before surgery. But even better news is that since getting home from the hospital I have not had to take my diabetes medication. This was one of the major reasons for having the surgery and it feels like a great accomplishment to be able to do this so quickly. All other aspects of my health are improving and I feel so light already. I have gone from 345 pounds to 268. Dr Robert O’Rourke is an excellent surgeon. My pain was never over a level 3. I highly recommend Dr. O’Rourke. I look forward to keeping you all posted. God bless you all and keep you safe and healthy.

5/18/06 Well I thought I would update for ya'll. I am doing great. I am one of those WLS patients who doesnt lose a ton of weight right off the bat but I have lost a total of 90 pounds. ( 52 pre-op and 38 post) I am down from a size 32 jeans to a 22. I am wearing a size 20 slacks today! Woo Hoo! I just love being able to fit into smaller clothes. I am attending a neices wedding this Saturday and a lot of my family members who I have not seen in a while are anxoius to see the smaller me! I just love how supportive my family and friends are.

I had plastic surgery yesterday to remove a fatty lump on my left cheek. I have had this thing for years, but with the weight lose it had become visibly obvious. Well it's gone and even though I am still a little swollen, I can tell the difference. I get the stitches removed next Thursday.

Well that is all for now. I just want to reiterate how much I enjoy reading about ya'll. I find so many answers, encouragement, concern and flat out love for each other that it really motivates me and keeps me smiling. Thanks to all of you. You are wonderful! Each and every one of you. TTFN, Amanda

8/9/06 Hello all. It's been a couple of months, and I am doing great. Down a total of 104 pounds! Woo Hoo! Well, my other scale says more, but I will go with the scale I started with. I am now wearing a size 18 jeans. Started in 32's. What a difference. My significant other is now talking marriage. This is something he wouldn't even consider before. He's been married three times and was a little gun shy, but the fact that I have been getting a lot of attention lately may have something to do with it. Back to the jeans, I was able to squeeze into my 16's but since breathing is essential, I will wait until I don't have to lay down to zip them up! LOL! It is sooooo awesome to run into friends I have not seen in some time and they not even recognize me. I get a hoot out of that one. I start talking to them and all of a sudden see the sign of recognition. It is wonderful. Well I better get back to work. I will be back, I promise! Have a great day ya'll!!!!!!
