David Barbara

"Dr. Barbara put me at ease at once...actually, the patient counselor/PA did that before I ever met the doctor. She was very nice and funny. He was kind, and to the point. I am pretty healthy, so there were a few things he needed to clarify and decide about (sleep apnea, for example...I am a "maybe", and after asking more indepth questions he decided that I do not need the sleep study, and he explained what would happen if he is wrong) I suppose that if I had to look for something wrong, it would be that he went through the explanations pretty quickly, but I had done so much research that I knew most of it, and I have some limited medical knowledge. He had everything in a mini flip chart that I thought was neat. His future patients should know that he is new to specializing in rny, but he has 15 or so years of surgical experience behind him. I am not sure how many rny surgeries he has done, but he has about 6500 surgeries under his belt. He emphasized aftercare a lot... reiterated several times that surgery is a tool, not a cure-all, and it is not 100%...sometimes stuff happens (complications) He let us know how it is without blowing anything off, but didn't use scare tactics, either. There is a very structured aftercare program at BTC. He clarified the home support system twice. Overall I would give him a 10 out of 10. I think surgical competence would be more important than bedside manner for obvious reasons. If the surgeon is incompetant, you can die. I think Dr. Barbara has both surgical competence and bedside manner."
