Shock of My Life
Jul 06, 2010
I got the shock of my life last month when I went to the surgeon. I left at Dr. Chengelis' office on June 16th thinking it would take another 4 months before I could be approved for WLS but after Rebecca got back from vacation on 6/29, I found out that I had been approved for surgery. But I'm ahead of myself - a little history first. About 2-3 years ago my GYN suggested that I consider WLS. I didn't think too much about it as I continued to go to my family doctor. Every 3 months we would talk about my weight and try different things like more dieting, exercise drugs, etc. to help me lose weight but nothing really made a dent in my weight loss. About a year and a half ago I mentioned to my family doctor that the GYN suggested that I consider WLS and what did he think. He thought it might be something I should consider.
I think what really tipped the scales for me was when my 51 year old husband was diagnosed with cancer. He's slender, eats right, exercises, yet he's the one who got cancer. I know this sounds awful but I always thought that I would be the one to die first. I've always been overweight and I just assumed it would be me to get sick. So late 2008 and half of 2009 was spent taking care of him, my college age son who broke his foot and my dad who ended up in a Florida nursing home for 21 days. In October 2009 I went to a weight loss seminar through our local hospital weight loss center. As recommended, I called our insurance and they told me that I would have to be on an organized WL plan for 6 months before I would be approved for surgery.
In April 2010, I went to Beaumont Weight Loss center in MI, and started the process. After a zillion tests and starting a WL program, I completed all the requrements and was referred to a surgeon. Ten days later, I find out that I'm approved and my surgery is scheduled for July 27th. So the journey begins.
So today this 51 year old mother of two, wife to a loving, cancer-surviving, husband, starts a new journey. I have to say I'm nervous but I'm more nervous about dying young (yes, I'm still young!) so I'm willing to change every thought, feeling, love-affair that I have with & about food and change my life.
