4 YEARS POST OP

Jul 03, 2012

That is right I am 4 years post op from my gastric bypass surgery. The weight loss of 130 lbs was life saving to say the least. As part of my recovery I started to walk and that led me to running again. Yes, I was a runner but after cervical surgery and a heart attack (4 stents in one artery) the lack of exercise led to the increase of weight. Since my surgery I have completed several marathons, half marathons, 5 & 10K runs, triathlons including the Eagleman Half Ironman in June 2011. July 2, 2012 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer that included more surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy, finished chemo February 2012. Currently I have completed a half marathon in May and I am training for a Triathlon in August and September 2012. My schedule also includes a 100 mile bike ride and 2 more marathons. October 2011, 3 days after my 3rd chemo treatment I completed the Seagull Century ride which I can say was the hardest thing I ever did in my life. None of this would be happening if I had not had the surgery 4 years ago. My cancer team said I did so well with my treatments due to the excellent condition I was in at the time. So if you are questioning should I or shouldn’t I have the surgery I would do it all again. There is not a day that I regret my decision to have the life changing and saving surgery and I am good friends with my surgeon.
