Pre Op at the Hospital

Mar 08, 2010

Today I went to my pre op appointment at the Hospital. I had my final labs, xray, ultrasound and nurse interview. I have one more appointment, the surgeos pre op on Thursday and then I will be ready for surgery.

Today it seems so real. I am two weeks away from surgery and I'm really nervouse. I want to make it through surgery without complications and I want to be successful with my weight loss. I need to be healthy for my kids, for myself and to enjoy life again...

Appointments and Tests Galore

Feb 20, 2010

So I am on my way to getting all my pre op tests done. First of all, I know I am super lucky to have this great job that allows me the flexibility to take the time off to go do my tests. I make up the time in the evenings or early morning hours from home. One less thing to worry about.

I had my psych eval. It was interesting, the therapists asks me about my background, childhood, family and eating/weight history. She asks about behaviors that I will need to change post op and recommends long term therapy. Overall, not a painful test.

The next day I had a consult with the sleep doctor, an EKG and Stress Test with the Cardiologist and a consult with the GI doctor. The sleep doctor went over the sleep study test and what will happen after if Sleep Apnea is diagnosed.

The Cardio did an EKG and then the stress test. This test meant I walked on the treadmill for 3 minutes at a walking pace, then 3 minutes at a higher inclination and then 1 minute at a "running" pace. This last minute was really tough. I was completely out of breath and my chest hurt. I was sweating and it took over an hour to get my chest to stop hurting. The Dr said all was good.

Then was the Gastro appointment. They asked a lot of questions about my history and then scheduled an Upper endoscopy for next week.

The day after that I went to the Nutritionist at the surgeon's office. This appointment is not covered by insurance. It costs $180 and she asks questions about weight history, etc. and then I get to ask questions about before and after surgery. Most of the responses are that they would go over that as we get closer to surgery so not really sure why this appointment.?!?!

Finally last night I had my sleep study. This was not easy. You have leads on your head, forehead, next to your eyes, behind your ears, your cheeks, chest, legs, belts around your belly and above your breasts and a pulse ox on your finger. You then have to sleep on your back (which I never do) and two hours into the exam, if you meet their criteria, you need to be hooked up to the CPAP machine. The mask is really tight and at some point was irritating my skin. I had to get a different type of mask to complete the test. At about 5:30am, the tech woke me up and told me I was done. I have to go back on Wed to see the Dr and get the results. I am sure I will need to go on CPAP for surgery.

That's all for this week. I will update more as new tests are done.

My Journey Begins

Feb 15, 2010

I am having WLS. I have been thinking about it for a long time and made the decision to go to a seminar in Jan 2010 after hitting an all time high of 272. I also had my annual physical in November and quite a few things were not within normal range. I have considered, researched, debated and analyzed WLS. I am now sure this is the next step.

I got my approval and surgery date this morning as I was walking out the door for my Psych Eval. Tomorrow I have Sleep Study Consult, Cardio Consult and GI Consult. I am ready for this.
