The Long Journey
Mar 01, 2007
I began my journey 3 years ago trying to have WLS. At the time I had Pacificare HMO. They denied me three times. I have real issues with that because I feel the if a doctor thinks surgery like this will help you then the HMO should listen. I am well aware that this does not happen. So after my 3rd denial from Pacificare they told me that I would have to be on a supervised diet for a year. I said OMG by that time you will change the rules again!
So I decided to try to get it thru my work. They had me go thru tests or clearances from Cardiology and Pulmonary to insure I was fit for surgery. By the way I was 43 years old and fairly healthy except for the obesity. So they found that I had sleep apnea and some other obesity related issues. After a year I finally had an appointment to see the WLS team. I was told to lose 13 pounds and call them and they would set me up for surgery. Adkins took that 13 pounds off in 2 weeks. I tried to call the doctor back, over and over. I finally got in touch with someone 2 weeks after that who told me that they had dropped the program and basically I would have to go back on the waiting list for another place that would be up to 18 months! I was furious. I had spent a good chunk out of pocket for all the needless tests for them to just drop me...
So the next year I signed up for another health insurance. I followed their requirements once I finally pinned them down and was approved and had surgery 3 weeks ago.
I have not been obese all of my life. I have struggled with my weight and probably been overweight but not obese. My obesity came when I quit smoking in 1997. No matter how much I exercised I continued to pack on the pounds and when I found that the exercise was not helping I just quit trying. I gained 130 pounds, wow! I tried the usual diets off and on and would lose then gain. My problem is that I get bored with the food choices. I pray that this works for me. I am only in the beginning stages right now so everything is new. I am fearful of going off and eating some things because of adverse effects. I have learned what happens when you eat too fast. At least for me I get a terrible pain in the epigastric area that won't subside until I sit and relax for 15-20 minutes. I haven't thrown up that god! I have learned that most people do well but there are some that don't and in the end they pack it back on again.
I have been journaling also. It was recommened to me and it makes sense that it would help to keep you on track.
So that's my story in a nutshell.
Thanks for reading.
