2 Weeks post-op

May 31, 2007

I met with my surgeon yesterday for my first post-op appointment.  I cannot believe how smoothly this is all going.  I have lost 15lbs total since my pre-surgery weigh-in.  All my incisions are mostly healed.  I have had no reactions to foods, no problems with dehydration or bathroom issues.  There were so many things that I had read about before surgery that could possibly go wrong, one cannot help but be a little aprehensive.  I honestly could not be happier right now.  I feel great, I was back to work in a week, and I have been walking between 2-3 miles a day since last Thursday (1 week post-op). I got the clearance yesterday to return to exercising with no restrictions so I went on a long bike ride last night on the bay trail by my home.  Today I will resume weigh training.  I am hoping with the adequate protein and water and sufficient cardio, weight training and pilates I will be able to minimize the "excess skin" problem so many of us encounter.  My next appointment with my surgeon is in 4 weeks.  I will update you then!

Home from the hospital

May 19, 2007

I came home from the hospital today.  I am amazed at how good I feel.  There is a little pain, but not enough to take the meds that make me drousy. I feel swollen and bloated, but I hear that is normal. I have been up and moving because my doctor told me that would help alot.  So far, the protein has not been a problem - but it's only been one day.  I am concentrating on drinking protein drinks  - 3 per day (15 grams of protein each) and I am constantly sipping water.  Everything so far seems to be going as expected.  I am off of work for the next week.  I will keep you posted.

I have a date!

May 08, 2007

It's been a while since I have updated my blog.  Since the last time I was here I have met with a dietician, i have continued meeting with a therapist once a week to try and get a handle on my food issues before surgery, I have had two more rounds of blood work, I have gone through a sleep study and been diagnosed with sleep apnea, I have met with my surgeon two more times for weigh-ins, and I have a scheduled a date!
I had all my pre-op appointments last week, the hospital tour, the EKG, more blood work, a class with the nutritionist and meeting the wonderful nurses in the bariatric unit.
My surgery is 8 days away and I cannot wait!  I am so excited - not nervous - just really excited.  I have been working out with a trainer for the past month to get myself prepared for the increased exercise after surgery - I even bought a bicycle and have been taking short rides on the bay trail.  I can feel my energy level changing already in anticipation of being able to be more active on a regular basis.
My doctor and his staff have been wonderful and there have been absolutley no snags in the process whatsoever!  I am feeling really blessed.
I will be back soon with more updates!

Surgery Consultation

Feb 22, 2007

I met with my surgeon, Dr. Barry Sanchez, for the first time today.  I have heard great things about him and after meeting with him I have to agree with them all. He is young and good looking (I was warned of this), but he is extemely competent and straightforward. He is just friendly enough but mostly all business. As far as I am concerned, that's what I want in a surgeon.
I have already completed the psych exam, I have a letter of referral from my PCP, I have an appointment to meet with a dietician next week, and I have been through my first round of bloodwork.
Today I was told I need to lose 10 pounds, meet with a sleep specialist and be tested for sleep apnea, and have one more round of blood work.
My next appointment with Dr. Sanchez in scheduled for March 27.  If I have completed all of my "homeowork" by that time, Yvette, his coordinator, told me that we can submit my case to the insurance company and schedule a date.
I have already talked to my insurance company on my own, and as long as I follow all the rules and submit the correct information, I should be approved. I hope I am not getting my hopes up . This is my first go-around and so far all the stories I have read about insurance nightmares and months and months of waiting for surgery seemed like the norm.
My fingers are crossed!
