May 24 2002: recieved letter today denying approval at this time . Sent in first appeal letter 05/24/02

Received second denial 5/28/02. Come to find out it is my union that has the exclusion not Healthlink. I am not ready to take on the union at this time. I am going to have a hiatal hernia repaired and at that time I will self-pay on the bypass. Will update as soon as I know for sure.

AUGUST 8TH 2002 Great news! My surgery is approved for my hiatial hernia repair. I will self-pay for the RNY at the time of this surgery. My Dr. wants $4200.00 for his fee and this includes the follow up visits. His assistant's fee is $1400.00. I called today to set up my pre-op appointment and the nurse told me the Dr. was going to lower his fee. I don't know how much but that sure sounds good to me. The hospital wants $10000.00, $7500.00 at the time of surgery and the balance in 6 months. I had to do some serious juggeling to come up with this type of money in less than 2 months but I am not about to let nothing get in my way. I knew I could get some money from my 401k but first there was a small matter of paying of $7000 from a previous loan. My credit is no the worlds greates having filed bankruptcy in 1998. Luckily my parent had a great banker who was willing to lend me the money to pay off that loan. I did require me to take out a 2nd mortgage and I have to pay it back in 2 months time. I am getting a loan for $14500.00. I will have to pay the bank back $7600 and that will leave me with $6900. I was also able to get a signature loan from my credit union so thats another $3500 for a grand total of $10400. Just in case I need it I have a credit card with a balance of $2000. I am prayin I won't have to use this. with the 2 loans I will have a total of $125 come out of m check weekly. I feel this is a small price to pay for the benefits of this surgery. If I am able to come off of my meds after losing weight I will be saving about $120 -$150 per month.

Well I've made it over to the other side. I had Lap RNY on Tuesday August 27 th and was released on Thursday. August 29th. I also had a hiatal hernia repaired and a total thyroidectomy. It was all worth it my pain level never climed above a 3. The majority of my pain was from the thyroid removal severe sore throat. Well day 3 is almost over and all pain is subsiding. I think the thyroid goiter was causing the blockage of air thru my windpipe as I have not had to be on my oxygen at night. I will keep it arournd for a couple of weeks just to be sure. Iwill keep you all informed soon as I have some numbers to post. Until then see you Lighter.

SEPTEMBER 4 2002
One week check up. Lost a total of 8 pounds heeeeyyyy!!! Feeling great, drain also removed today hope to start exercising in the next week or two, Doc said I can return to work on September 16th. I was actually looking forward to being off at least 6 weeks.

September 25 2002 One month post-op down 22 pounds. I feel great no longer wake my self up snoring. Back at both jobs. About to start working out to the Zumba tapes I ordered. Need to get in more h2o and protien for the most part life is good.

November 20 2002

I am now 12 weeks post-op and down 50 pounds. I weighed this morning, 190 it is so good to finally be under 200. I was on a 4 week plataeu the whole month of October. No weight loss but I continued to lose inches. I have gone from a size 20 to a junior size 11. It is kind of neat to share clothes with my 13 year old daughter. One other Blessing seems to be occuring......my hair is getting thicker instead of falling out. This my be due to the adjustments to my thyroid medication or to my protein intake. Who cares as long as it is not falling out. My hair is so thin I really can't afford to lose any.

I have an appointment on the 19th to check my tsh level. My weight loss has slowed way down. Hopefully an increase in my thyroid medication will speed things up. Will update when things change.

March 14 2002
I have increased my protien level and am starting to lose again. I am currently at 170. I am still wearing size a size 10 but I also tried on a couple of pants that were size 8 that fit. I am no longer morbidly obese just obese and that feels great

After a very long plataue (6 month +) I am finally down to 165. I have uped the protien and started doing Tae Bo with in one week time I have lost 5 pounds. My BMI is 29.2 which is moderately overweight. I no longer could qualify for bariatric surgery. Life is sooooooooo...... good.
