Ok, My gastric bypass was performed on Monday, June 21. I
had been told to report to the surgery department at 10:30
a.m. I was finally taken into surgery around 8 PM. Perils of
being the last case of the day. I woke up feeling no pain but
a lot of pressure. As soon as I was settled in my room, my
nurse insisted that I walk to releive the pressure. I'm sure
she was thinking gas, as was I. Spoke to Dr. Shirmer while I
was walking and he said the surgery went very well. On
Tuesday, I went down for the leak test. The contrast was
slow leaving the pouch and there was some moving up and
down inside my esophagus. Finally while I was lying on my
right side waiting for the contrast to move through, it all
came back up followed by blood. I was taken back to my
room to. The vomiting of blood stopped, then I was bring
up foamy, mucusy substance that I thought was from my
sinuses. Every once in a while I would have a "wet burp" and
would spit up blood mixed with bile. All the wile, they were
giving me medication for nausea in my IV. My blood sugars
and blood pressure were both out of control and on top of
that I had the roommate from hell! But I digress.
Wendesday morning I was taken back to radiology. A
picture was taken of my abdomen and it was decided I
would have a cat scan instead of another leak test. By 5:20
PM I was headed back to surgery for an exploratory to find
out what and where my instestines were blocked and to
correct the blockage. As soon and I woke up from the
second surgery, I felt 100% better. Thursday morning I was
given another leak test that went off without a hitch and
was released from the hospital This morning, Saturday,
June 26. I'm doing great, tolerating the stage 2 diet very
well and trying to get in my liquids. I still have diahrea but
am just glad that things are going through and I have
bowel function. BTW the blockage was a blood clot in the
small intestine and the revision was accomplished through
the same small inicisions that the lap RNY was done
through.
