Seriously!
Feb 16, 2012
Okay, I have been out of surgery 8 months and my weight as not really changed since early December. Granted, I am in my healthy weight range, but I hoped to get down 7 more pounds. I guess that I can't complain, it has been a pretty easy time since my surgery.
At least, I am wearing a size 10, down from a 2X or 3X God knows what..... I feel good, exercising and now in traiining to run a half-marathon in October. Pretty exciting stuff!! My professional training begins April 1. I am hoping that the snow will be gone by then and I won't be freezing to death out there,

Okay, it is getting a little more difficult to lose weight now. I am 169 lbs and have met my first goal of getting into the "healthy" range.
That goal was to get my weight into a healthy weight range. I did it and I feel great. My next goal is to lose
Another 9 pounds. I suspect it will take some time now but that is okay too.
I started working out with a personal trainer and that has been interesting. He shows little mercy. Lol
Have a great day!

More than 4 months Out

Well, it has been 4.5 months since my surgery and I am still losing weight. My caloric intake is seemingly higher than others at about 1200 to 1500 per day. Despite that, I am losing a a steady rate of 1 pound per week now. I am 3 pounds from a 25 BMI (169) and 12 pounds from my goal weight. I am feeling fairly confident that i will reach my first goal of a 25 BMI, and hopeful that I will reach my goal weight. Only time will tell.
It has been interesting because I have learned that I probably will never "dump". One day, I was feeling quite shaky and when I checked my blood sugar, it was dangerously low. We were travelling so I didn't have a lot of options except consume a part of a chocolate bar to see if that would raise my sugar. I did eat about 6 squares of a jersey milk and my sugar came up a bit. I never gave it any thought until afterward, but it didn't make me feel ill at all. I really don't want to challenge this again, but I think I am pretty safe to assume that I won't be a dumper. I am not sure if this is good or bad, but it is what it is.

I found a site today that really helped put things in perspective for me. It really made me sit back and look at all of the progress that I have made without focussing on just the "pounds" lost.
1) no longer have chronic migraines
2) Type 2 diabetes in remission
3) Sore knees virtually disappeard (I actually started a running program this week)
4) GERD - Gone!
5) Hypertension under contrrol - no meds
6) Plantar fasciitis - gone
I am still using a CPAP for sleep apnea, but my doctor tells me that I probably don't need it, and that I need another sleep test. I will do that, but after 20 years of having a sleep disorder and 10 years of taking sleeping pills, I am thoroughly enjoying my sleep now. In some ways, I may have become dependant on my CPAP. We will see what happens.
So, I am choosing to be grateful today for all of the positives that I have so far, and I am only 9 weeks post op. I couldn't be happier!

Six Weeks Out
Jul 23, 2011
Hi there, well I made it to the infamous 6-week mark. It feels good and things are going along quite smoothly. I have absolutely no complaints. I have had no adverse reactions to any type of food, but I am still moving along quite carefully with my food selections.
I can tolerate eggs, cheese, turkey, chicken (really moist) and cooked veges. I have not tried any red meat, nor do I want to for at least 6 months. I can eat some snacks like pretzels, SF, FF puddings, yogurt etc. So far, all is good. Yesterday, I went out for breakfast for the first time. I was a little nervous, but ended up ordering an egg white cheese omellette with a fruit cup on the side. It was perfect! I couldn't finish the omellette, but that was okay. We travelled a bit last weekend, and I needed to eat out. That was a bit of a challenge, but found salmon one night and chicken (swiss chalet) the next. The salmon was terrific (and expensive) but the chicken was dry. I ordered a side of gravy and that really helped. So, I am slowly figuring it out, it just takes time.
If only the heat would subside. It was 40 degrees celcius 2 days ago. It makes it really difficult to walk. I guess I will hit the mall today and do some mall walking.
I bought myself a pair of size 14 pants this week, with the intention of putting them away for next month. Funny thing is, I tried them on and guess what? They fit! So, I went right back out and bought 2 more pairs. lol Black pants for work, my standard work wear.
Anyhow, I will be back in a few weeks to post again. To date, I have had to problems, concerns, and I am feeling wonderful and enjoying the new wardrobe. I could not be happier!

Four Weeks Out
Jul 10, 2011
Today measures 4 weeks from my date of surgery. It is hard to believe that it has been that long. The "ride" has been pretty good so far. I have moved to more soiid foods, today I had eggs for the first time. No problem at all. I had two bites of my husband's soft ice cream - I didn't dump. Of course, two small tastes may not have been enough to trigger that, but I didn't want to try any more.
This morning, we had a lovely 5 kilometre walk around Point Pelee. It was terrific and I feel very energized.
The one problem that I am noticing, is that I am so busy that I forget to eat. And I haven't even returned to work yet. lol That changes this week, I am back! I have really enjoyed this time off, I wish it was longer. I think that once I am back at work, I will hae a fairly fixed routine for eating, but I will need to consistently find ways to get outside and walk on my lunch hour.
I saw my surgeon for my 1-month check up. She was very pleased and told me that I have lost 93% of my extra weight. I figure that brought me to a BMI of 30. My personal goal is a BMI of 25, so I will keep plugging away.
Gotta run....

Three Weeks Out
Jul 02, 2011
Well, I made it to the 3 week mark. I feel absolutely fine. I went into the office this week for one morning, and boy was I exhausted afterward. I realized that although I feel great, I am not ready just yet. one more week off! Yay. I am happy to delay the inevitable for one more week.
Weight loss as certainly slowed down this week. I was loving the 1 pound a day loss, but that stopped completely. I have lost about 2 pounds all week, totalling a 27 pound weight loss since my pre op appointment. I have already bagged up my size 20 clothes and sent them off to the Salvation Army. I never want to see them again. I am into some size 18, but mostly size 16 clothes right now. I bought 3 items from my local "overweight ladies" store yesterday because they were marked down to $10. I figure that since they were a size X (down from 2X), that I would eventually fit into them. I cam home and tried them on, and low and behold, they fit. That was a surprise. I will have to figure out what clothes I have that work for the office soon. I haven't even begun to look at my dress pants yet. I know that I have at least 5 pairs of pants that are size 20 so I will get rid of those. In the meantime, I picked up 2 pairs of size 16 ladies pants, but that is not enough. Oh well, if this is my only problem, I LOVE IT!
Technically, I am still supposed to be on a full fluid diet, but I am trying a few things new, purreed of course. Last night I had mashed potatos - it felt good to eat the same food as my family. I also had some purreed turkey soup the other day. I have not had any problems digesting anything at all. I have had no dumping, no intolerance etc. howeer, I haven't tried anything solid yet, so I am sure that can change.
This week I see my surgeon and internist. Next week (the 11th), I see my nutritionist. I am hopeful that I will keep losing, perhaps a little faster? I know that these things take time, but I can't help being a little impatient with the weight loss.
Let me just say, it is wonderful to be on the "other side" after spening 1 1/2 years in queue for this surgery. Life is just better, and moving forward.
Cheers!

10 days out
Jun 21, 2011
Things are progressing quite nicely. On Day 8, I called the bariatric centre to tell them that I thought I wasn't taking in enough calories on clear fluids. I was tracking about 100 calories each day and I was starting to feel really lethargic. They were etremely helpful and moved me right away to full fluids.
Now I an have Boost, Carnation Everyday breakfast, yogurt, pudding etc. What a change. Just after 2 days, I feel like I have lots of energy and really almost back to normal. I can see why some people can get into trouble early on by eating the wrong thing, because you feel just like you did before surgery.
My weight loss hit 25 lbs today, YAY! That translates into about 12 inches of fat gone. That feels wonderful, but even better is that I am not taking any more medications.
I am off to see the family doctor for a quick check up today since I don't return to my surgeon until mid July.

One Week from Surgery
Jun 18, 2011
Today is exactly one week from my surgery. I cannot believe how good I feel. Aside from some frequent trips to the bathroom (my bowels don't seem to want to hold anything), I am doing great. So good, in fact, that yesterday my husband and I went to the theatre to see a new film "midnight in paris". I love Woody Allen films, so I really enjoyed the movie, but i also really enjoyed getting out of the house.
My new pouch is becoming easier every day. Whereas I coulld barely hold 2 tablespoons of liquid on the first 2 days, I can easily eat 1/2 cup of jello now. I must say, I am getting a little tired of broths and jellos, but yesterday I had a few sugar free popsicles and that seemed to help. Overall though, my daiy average of calories is only around 100. I do worry that I will start to feel weak or something.
In one more week I can begin solid fluids, like yogurt, pudding, cottage cheese etc. I can hardly wait! In the meantime, the weight is falling off at the rate of 1 pound a day. I know that this will not continue for long, but is sure is nice to watch the numbers actually go the "other way" on the scale. 23 pounds from my pre op appointment 3 weeks ago (14 pounds on Optifast and 9 pounds since surgery one week ago).

Day 5
Jun 17, 2011
It has been an interesting day today. I ventured out for my longest walk yet. Twice around the block and it took me 30 minutes. I hung onto my husband's arm the entire time. When I returned home, I fell asleep for 1 1/2 hours. That made up for not sleeping much last night.
I think that my inabiliy to sleep is actually coming from my heparin shots, but I can't be sure. Otherwise, it is because my body has been through so much lately. It is difficult to say.
I am finding less tightness each day. It only took me 1 1/2 hours to eat my dinner tonight. 1 cup of beef broth, and 1/2 cup of sugar free jello. Since I am tracking my weight, i can see that i have only eaten about 120 calories today, and my walk burned the same amount. I can't believe that i am not hungry. It is truly remarkable. I just need to get more water in, that will help.
