a week out
Aug 23, 2008
Well,
I'm a little over a week out and feeling pretty good. I had some rough days post-op -- a little fever, a little pain, a rash reaction to one of the meds (the subcutaneous 'caine in the Q-ball, we think), a lot of fatigue. But I am very lucky that my situation allowed me to really rest, and I am bouncing back nicely. Most of the post-op misery was from the anesthesia, I think, and not so much the surgery itself.
I'm not very interested in weight loss right now and am focussed on learning how to get my fluids in (64 oz.) and 6 small "meals" a day - of 4 oz or 1/2 cup, aiming for 90g protein. I'm allowed to add protein powder to the full liquids on my plan, but only at the "meals", not in between, so it is a bit of a challenge to find palatable options.
Mostly I'm eating pudding + pp, Nancy's lowfat cottage cheese (14 g), Fage Greek Yogurt (9 g), nonfat ricotta cheese (6 g) and some cream soups + pp, which turns them into paste - ick. We bought a plethora of pps; soy, whey isolate, and rice primarily, with and without "vanilla" flavor. Only one has sweetener, as I really don't like asparatame or splenda much, and am already getting too much of that junk in puddings and sf popsicles. I'd rather add stevia if I want something particularly sweet, and usually food seems sweet enough anyway.
I'm trying to decrease the junk fluids (crystal lite, popsicles) and increase the plain water, with pretty good results. I guess I just don't want so much food coloring, etc. in my system -- I didn't eat much that way before, even with all the fat and sugar I ate, and I don't really want to start living that way now. But I'll admit a little crystal lite can really help get the fluid in, so I'm not beating myself up about it.
I started supplements today: calcium citrate, Vit D., vit B-12 sublinguals, chewable multi, iron. I want to start some EFAs, too.
Thanks to everyone who has kept in touch with emails and kind support as I've been uncomfortable and whiny post-op. The support here is terrific!

Here we go...
Aug 09, 2008
Hmmm. I'm not much of a blogger, which will surprise those who know how much I love to both write and talk. But it is kind of weird to write into the void.
I'm a few days away from my surgery and I guess I feel pretty good about it. Nervous, but good. The nerves don't have anything to do with the decision to do it, or the work it will require, or any of that. Just plain old major surgery nerves. I'm counting on Dr. Dan to have steady hands and a brave heart, and hoping my anesthesiologist has a good night's sleep the night before. I know I can count on my surgical nurses -- they always rock.
Yep. Blogging 'aint my thing. That's all I can possibly say tonight.
Ta.
