1 month Post-op Update

Oct 28, 2007

As of 10/25/07 I am 1 month Post-op. Overall I feel that I am doing very well.
I am trying hards not to "obsessed by the scale". therefore I am weighing once a week at home and every 2 weeks at the WSL Clinic as it is in the same hospital I work in . My curent weight is 216, this is 11 pounds down post-op and -53 pounds from 2/07. This could be considered a slow-loser to some, but I am OK with this to date. The inches are going. My 18W are loose, but hope I can make another month with them.  Between the 11 pounds I lost with the protein 2 week pre-op diet and the 11 pounds post-op I am where I was estimated to be at 216 on the weight lost planner on the website.

I am currently eating 2-3 oz of protein a meal with maybe a bite or 2 of veggies or a fruit.. I usually start the day off with a protein shake, as I am getting ready for work. Therefore I know I am getting in at least 70-80gm of protein daily. I am not hungry and really feel the best in the morning when I am empty. I have to-date refrained from snacking/grazing except sugar-free ice-pops on the weekends ( i count as fluid).  I really have to work to get my fluids in as for lack of better terms, my pouch is "sensitive"----IT has really never liked water or any fluids. I have tried everything..Hot, warm. cold, iced, flavored---it varies from day to day, but it is getting better with time. .............................Thanks Goodness.

Have thown-up a total of 3 times, 1 time after eating refried beans that weren't from home,  1 time when I took an ounce of filet steak , processed and put it with an egg--i thought it was too early for beef, but it sounded so good. 1 time --I think I had a bug as I had the chills all day and nothing stayed down.  Everything has stayed down for  over 12 days now.  However i have learned the importance of not introducing to many new items in a short period of time and chewing very well.

I returned to work after 3 weeks. Dr. Price recommends 2, but am glad I took 3 as I felt great a home and was excercising daily before going back to work ( walking 3 miles a day- in 2 trips). I was really tired at work and had to come home to nap and the first week back I didn't get much exercise in, but by week two I had got in 5 days.

MY GOAL starting in the morning is to get up early and walk on the treadmill for at least 20 min before work.(I HATE EARLY MORNING EXERCISE--BUT I WANT TO GET IT OVER WITH AND NOT HAVE TO STRESS ABOUT IT ALL DAY) Then if I feel like it after work I can fit in a class at the health club, but at least i will have my walk in for the day.

To date, I don't think I am having any weird emotional stuff going on . I have had continued great support from my family, friends and my DH--this support has been instrumental in my recovery.

Decision to Surgery 2/07-9/07

Reality day 2/02/07. I had my routine PCP appt with Matt. I have gone to him for years, and have worked with him longer. ( when he was a resident and I a nurse).
I was there for usual stuff. medication renewal..., my weight that day was 269lbs ( I am 5'3"). I was frustrated. because a couple of years ago I had got down to 225-230 and held there about 6-9 months. I was at that time on 2 HTN meds, Asthma medications, recently added high cholesterol medication, Prozac and Migraine meds.

In the past we had briefly discussed WLS but that was about 3 years ago and he did not feel there was anyone local that was "worthy".  At the end of the visit. I mentioned to him that I have ongoing back pain secondary to breast size and we discussed the need for breast reduction. His comment was that if "I was going to take the risk of surgery and anesthesia, I needed to do something that would decrease my morbidity and mortality and consider WLS".  He mentioned that Dr. John Price had recently been recruited to ou health system to start a WLS program, coming from a successful program in LA.  He also mentioned that out health system has specfically wanted to start a program to benefit the employees and families.( plus to benefit the system). That is when my research began, as a nurse that works in research I did a literature search and pulled as many articles of Lap Band and RNY as I could. Looking at all aspects. I enrolled into the WLS program and out insurance required a 3 monthe multidisciplinary  team weightloss program which was offered through the WLS Program I completed that in late June. Received my Insurance aceptance on Auguat 24th and Surgery on the Sept. 25th.  My weight going into surgery was 227lbs. I had lost 41 pounds since 02/07, and 11lbs of that was in the 2 week liquid protein the 2 weeks before surgery.  Initial BMI was 47, going into surgery was 42. I also was diagnosed with sleep apnea and wear CPAP at night during the Pre-op Evaluation.
