Before surgery questions.

I saw a surgeon yesterday and was told I was a candidate for surgery, but that he wanted me to see a dietician or other supervised weight loss program four to six months first to learn how to eat three meals a day instead of my current one meal and evening snack. I need encouragement. Has anyone else experienced this? I am very discouraged.
