Surgery Done!
Nov 07, 2010
Hi everyone,
Well, I did it. I had surgery on Nov 3 2010 in Mexico with Dr Rodriquez. We had to leave the day before and stay in El Paso Tx. The next morning (day of surgery) the driver Sergio picked us up from the hotel and took us to the hospital in Juarez. Once we got to the hospital I met up with one of the other doctors and did some paper work. The paperwork was in Spanish and he read it to me. I didn’t like that part, anyways it was ok. Once I did the paperwork and gave them the check he took me right to x-rays. Once the x-ray was done we went up to my room. It was clean looked good. The only thing is it smelled really bad, but the DR was right on it and had the nurses take care of it. They had me get into my gown and get hooked up with the IV. Once this was done they told me that it was going to be about 40 minutes and they would come get me for surgery…. It was a few hours. Then about 5-7 nurses/staff came into the room and started putting the foot booties and the hair net on because they were ready.. Holly cow! I got really nervous. They wheeled me down in my bed. Once I got there they started putting the stockings on and all the other pre-op stuff they do. That’s where I met Dr Rod, really quick Hi. It was really hard because really none of the nursing staff spoke English. Once I was out of surgery I was in a lot of pain, I thought to myself “what the hell did I just do”!! It was horrible. I felt like I was going to throw up so they gave me a pan, thank goodness I didn’t. I think that would have been so painful. Once up in my room I was in so much pain it hurt anyway I lied. My friend had to help me out of bed anytime I needed to use the restroom. The next morning I felt a little better, still a lot of pain. I tried to move around as much as I could. They really want you to get up and walk, I did a few times that day. The second day after surgery I had a reaction to my IV. I arm got really swollen so they removed the IV… Well that means no pain meds through the IV anymore. A few hours later the pain really hit so I asked and asked and again about 4 more times before I got some pain meds orally. Later that day I had an allergic reaction to the pain meds and broke out in hives. Once I showed the nurse this they were right on it with a shot of something in the butt. So needless to say, I got no more pain meds. I left the next morning for the airport. We waited in the boarder line for about 1.5 hours. Once we got our turn we got right through with no problems. Once we got to the airport I got some Aleve and took one. It really helped with the pain I was having. A few hours later I broke out in hives again so I got some Benadryl. Because of habit I took both of them-big mistakes. I felt horrible and sick to my stomach but the hives went away. I guess maybe I should have only done about ½ a pill. Well lesson learned the hard way on this one. Once I got home (total of 9 hours of travel time) I was weak, tired, and hungry. I had my husband take me to our local urgent care to get checked out. I started freaking out thinking do I have an infection for something… Yes, I know that hives are due to allergic reaction but I was worried. They took blood and everything is good. No infections!! She said it was one of the medications I was given, but not knowing what I had she couldn’t say what it was. Likely to be the pain meds. So I am not taking them. Aleve is working fine. Today is my first full day home and it has been pretty good. I am really weak. Last night when I got out of the shower I almost passed out. I got the black spots and light headedness. Once I made it to my bed and lay down for a minute I was fine. Since I am on all clear liquids right now today I had water, jello. Chicken broth and ISOPURE (40g protein per 20oz bottle) I’ve only got about ¼ of the bottle down of the ISOPURE. I’m just not sure how often I am supposed to drink. Yes, I did have some problems but really I have nothing bad to say about the hospital, nurses/staff or the doctors. Everyone was really nice and good. They did the best they could about not understanding the English and us not knowing Spanish. They give you a sheet that has most of the stuff you need.
