I had considered surgery for quite some time before I actually decided to do it. My body was more like 80 instead of 30. I weighed 322 lbs, had type II diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and could hardly breathe while sitting down because my chest was so large it was suffocating me. My last appt w/ my family dr scared me half to death when I said I knew I should lose weight or I would be dead before I was 40. She said "Oh no, that's only if you are lucky. It's more likely that you'll have a massive heart attack, be in a wheel chair, have a limb amputated from lack of circulation & be blind because of the diabetes." (She had been my dr for years and was used to being blunt w/ me.)
I tried one last time on my own. I stayed loyal to the Atkins diet for a month straight and didn't lose a pound. Plus my blood sugar still stayed elevated even w/o consuming any carbs. It was either lose weight or go on Insulin instead of my oral medication. I decided to lose the weight.
My surgery date was on May 9, 2005 at IU Med Center. I was expecting it to be done laproscopically but it was converted to open. My life changed forever that day & I will always celebrate that day as the day I truely began to live.
