Finally a NEW post
Apr 18, 2008
As of my surgery 12/6/07 I have lost 63lbs. I was at a plateau for about a month, weighing 225, and literally just started losing again this week. I found that eatng more protein really did help. I am really trying to get in protein at every meal and snack, and limit all carbs that are not fruit / veg. I have no problems with bread, other than it stalls my weight loss. But I have not tried sugar...and don't intend to for at least a year. I am still learning how to cope without food as a crutch.
For anyone viewing this blog, who is trying to make a decision whether or not to have the surgery. My opinion (and this is only an opinion...) is that it is the best thing I have ever done! I see a light at the end of the tunnel, and am within 75lbs of my goal weight.
Home and happy

I was on the 2 week pre-op, liquid protien ( broth and some veggies), and now on liquid again. I have so far lost 24 lbs in those three weeks!
If anyone is reading this site who is in the thinking stages of WLS...my one piece of advice would be to research your surgeon. I did a lot of research on my surgeons and found them to have awesome track records and great statistics. 0% fatalities and ,1% complications. Those were big things for me!
Some things that I will pass on that I wish I would have known: Have a nightgown ready when you come home. Wearing underware is a bit uncomfortable the first couple days. Rest....but don't stop moving! This really helps with getting the gas out. Personally, I think the gas is the worst pain from the surgery. My incisisions don't really hurt..they just itch a bit from healing. Talk in detail to your doctor about your post op diet. A lot of times the suggestions they give you in writing can be limited. The doctor gave me a couple of great ideas...from Jamba Juice smoothies to blending canned soup and adding some Parmesean for flavor. ALWAYS TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. These suggestions are just what happened to work well for me, so far.
On my Pre-Op diet....

280 lbs.
I am on my pre-op diet of high protein liquids. I bought the stuff from the NEW program, and it's awful! I am going back to the protein powder I originally bought at GNC. The calories and gm of protein are the same, but it tastes a million times better!
What they didn't tell me at the office is that I can supplement the drinks and bars with sugar free jello, low fat broth, and non-starchy veggies.
While the people who work there are nice, I don't think they are as informed as they need to be. It should be required (IMHO) that they KNOW what their poducts taste like, and are up to date with what to tell the patients about food supplementation. Success starts with this two- week process.
I'm hungry. It is amazing the role food plays in my life. It makes me happy, calms me down, and is my best friend. I am starting the mourning process, I guess. :)
