My journey through gastric bypass surgery

November 15, 2005

My name is Melissa and I am 23 years old. My start off weight is 281 pounds and I am 5'3" tall. I have been heavy for most of my life. I got really heavy after I had my 3 kids. I had them one after another (they are 1, 2, and 3) and never lost the weight from any of the pregnancies. I am ashamed of my self and hate going any where that people can see me. I went to communtiy days this past summer with my family and tried to ride a ride with my brother and was told in front of everyone that I had to get off of the ride because the restraints would not fit me. That was one of the worst moments of my life. Later on the same day at community days I was in in the snow cone line getting ice cream for my kids and some guy said ice cream is the last thing that lady needs. I knew that day that I had to do something drastic or I would be miserable for the rest of my life.

I went to my PCP's office yesterday for a follow up after an er visit. I have arthritis and joint damage in my knees from being so heavy. So my doctor agreed to send me to see the bariatric surgeon. I have to go to a group meeting on the surgery on March 8th. I'm trying not to get my hopes up to much because it is a long road and insurance may still say no, but it is the first step.

March 14, 2006

I attended the meeting and my first appointment with Dr. Zelkovic is March 20th. Step 1 completed, step 2 just around the corner.

April 10 2006

I had my consult with Dr. Zelkovic it went well. I have to see the dietician for 6 months, get bloodwork done, an Upper GI, Ultrasound, see phych, a pulminary function test, a sleep study, and an ekg.  It will take me 6 months to get all of this testing done, lol.

December 12, 2006

All of my testing is done finally. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, ashma, high colesterol, arthritis, and joint pain. My pre-op appointment was yesterday, I have a date! January 8, 2007! Yay!  My current weight is 273 pounds loss of 8 pounds during the dietican visits. I have to start a liquid diet on 12-26 to shrink my liver, yikes.

January 12, 2007

My surgery was Monday. Everything went well. my weight on surgery day was 262 pounds that makes a total loss of 19 pounds since this process began. The surgery was not as bad as I thought it would be.It is now Friday and I am doing fantastic. I havn't tried to eat yet I have just been drinking  alot of juice, water, and sugar free kool aid. I'm going to try some chicken broth for dinner tonight. My post-op appointment is on January 22, 2007, then I will be able to eat pureed foods, I can't wait to see my weight loss at my next appointment.

January 22, 2007

I had my 2 week post op appointment today. My weight today was 250. That makes a total loss of 31 pounds. I don't see the loss, mainly because my clothes aren't getting smaller, but I know that they will so I am happy with my loss so far. I am now graduated to pureed foods and holding everything down well. Thats all for now.

February 5, 2007

I had my 4 week post op appointment today. I only lost 3 pounds in 2 weeks  Total loss of 34 pounds since the beginning of this journey. I weigh 247 now. I'm still not dropping clothes sizes and frankly I'm a little disappointed that I haven't lost more. I thougt that I would have at least lost 10 pounds. I'm on regular foods now (soft) and that's going fine. I have not gotten sick or anything yet. That's all for now, hopefully my next update will have better news.

March 5, 2007

I am 3 days away from being 2 months post op today. I went to my Dr.'s appointment today and weighed in at 234! I lost 13 more pounds. I can really tell the difference now. I am in a size 20 jeans (I was a tight 26). Everything is going well and I will update again soon.

June 5, 2007

I am almost 5 months post op and 200 pounds. I am in a size 18! I can do so many new things that I haven't been able to do in years. I feel so much better already. My fiance and I set a wedding date, October 27, 2007.  I am trying to sell my old wedding gown (I bought pre-op) It is a size 26 and I will take $100 for it. I paid $399 and have never worn it. If anyone is interested please let me know.

July 23, 2007

I am six months post op and 194 pounds. I am finally under 200!  My weight loss is starting to slow down a bit, but I am fine with that as long as I keep losing. I am just sooooooo happy to be under 200, I have not been under 200 since I was about 15 years old. I am also quitting smoking again.  Tomorrow will be day 1 so wish me luck.

January 9, 2009

Well I was 2 years post op yesterday! My current weight is 124 and still losing. I am well under my goal of 150 and ready to stop. Alot has happened since my last post. I got married! I posted wedding pics. I've been married for a little over a year now. I also had a baby in April she is a beautiful little girl named Davina. I lost 12 pounds during my pregnancy, which was strange. I will take some new pics and post them soon. I still have the fat girl mentality. I don't know if you ever really lose that. I know that I'm thin, even maybe too thin, but I guess it takes time for the self esteem to get better.
