Dr. Alexander Abkin (Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons, Florham Park, NJ) now offers Stealth Gastric Bypass, a procedure that, for the first time, allows the surgeon to perform Gastric Bypass surgery with only three small incisions.
Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, limits the amount of food the stomach can hold by surgically reducing the stomach’s capacity to a few ounces. In addition to reducing food intake, Gastric Bypass procedure alters the digestion process, which curbs the amount of calories and nutrients absorbed. Stealth Gastric Bypass allows the surgeon to complete all steps of traditional Gastric Bypass procedure in a more minimally invasive fashion. The main difference between Stealth Gastric Bypass and conventional Gastric Bypass is the number and size of small incisions created in abdominal wall for inserting surgical instruments and a laparoscope. Instead of traditional five (5) incisions, Stealth approach utilizes three (3) incisions. One instrument and a laparoscope are inserted through a single incision above umbilicus.
