Change and what it brings...
Aug 17, 2009
I have always been afraid of change. Well...maybe afraid is the wrong word. I dislike change. I am one of those girls that likes everything planned out and once I get used to something, I like to stay the course. Now, don't get me wrong...I know that some change is good. Seasons change. Styles change. Trends change. That's not what I have a problem with...it's more of a change in my routine I tend to balk at and frown upon. As with most mothers, my day runs like a well greased wheel. Everyday has it's own routine and everyone has their own schedule. And, if something goes wrong, it's like a domino effect and your day ends up being a jumbled mess. I always talk of rolling with the punches when it comes to my lapband and I got to thinking that rolling with punches in everyday life might bring me the same success as it has with the band.
I am an advocate on research something until you get computer blindness and your fingers cramp up. This goes for anything from purchases to school projects. So, you can imagine that once I decided on WLS I spent three solid months doing laborious research on what would work best for me and my family. When the lapband was decide for me (long story) due to medical reasons, I threw myself to even more research until I was comfortable with the choice. I have a HUGE three ring binder with ideas, recipes, advice, and notes from the doctor. This is my WLS Bible. I reference it whenever I have a pressing question...like what medicine to take when I have a cold, ect ect. All my research has accumulated in this binder and I would be lost without out it. Or so I thought...
My husband cleaned the kitchen cabinets (audible gasp from all the ladies) one weekend while I was at work and put it in the garage. Of course, he didn't tell me where he put it and I tore the house apart looking for it and couldn't find it for weeks. But..I survived. I rolled with it. And..I was successful. The old, 294 pound Amanda would have used the missing binder as an excuse to cheat or binge, or go out to eat something bad, but the new 219 pound Amanda was just fine. I am changing one of the worst habits and personal flaws that I have had all my life..I am being flexible. I used this as a starting point to also change some other things in my life. I am distancing myself for negative people, I am trying new things, I am putting myself "out" there in places I would never before have. I changed my exercise routine to incorporate dancing. I changed my work schedule. I changed my attitude towards life in general. I am coming to the conclusion that I like change and even though it's a bit scary, it's a new adventure that I know I would not have taken if I hadn't gotten the lapband. I thought by getting the band all that would change would be my appearance and health. I was so wrong. It has changed so much more than that. In fact, I think I have changed more on the inside than on the outside. The way I look at situations and other people is totally different. I feel different too. I feel more..if you can understand that. I feel deeper, harder, and longer. I think the reason I was so against change before this that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do something difference because of my weight. Or that I would be rejected.
I hope change brings me more and more opportunities to become a better person. To be more flexible and forthcoming. I already feel I have become a better wife, mother, and friend because I care more about myself. Hopefully, like many things in nature, I will change into something incredible and at the end of this journey I will have found something in myself that I will be proud of..not just because of the weight loss, but because I will have become something better.

Jul 06, 2009
I just wanted to take time and reflect on the last three months. I started my pre-op diet April 10th 2009 with the idea in my head that I would try my best and if I didn't get to my goal weight, then at least I would be healthier. I originally wanted an RNY, in fact, I had my heart set on it and was DEAD SET against a lap-band. I wanted to loose all this weight and I wanted to do it quick. I talked my Dr into it, even though he was strongly suggesting a lap-band (because of my age and I have three small kids, etc). Fast forward to the pre-op testing and the EGD confirmed my worst fear...gastric ulcers. This ruled out the RNY and I was devastated. I cried and cried and was mad and upset and really just threw a good ol' fashion temper tantrum. I got over it. I got on OH and I got on the Lap-band board. By the next week I okay with it and by my surgery I was excited about it. I am not an overly religious person, but I am spiritual and I believe that fate/God/divine being works in mysterious ways. In fact, if you take time to follow the signs, the best choices are made for you. I know that doesn't make any sense, but I feel like those damn gastric ulcers saved me from a bad choice. I can honestly say that I have thrown myself into this new lifestyle. I have given it my ALL and everyday I thank heaven that I did this for myself. Never in my life have I been as proud of MYSELF as I am right now. It's hard to be proud of yourself when you are morbidly obese. Even if you have accomplished great things with your family, career, financially, it is still hard to look at yourself in the mirror. I have three of the most beautiful children in the world, and my career is great, but it wasn't enough. I felt like a failure because I couldn't get control of myself.
As of today, I have lost 57lbs. I am 37 lbs away from the coveted "onederland". I am very close to being a size 14. Not only that, but I am doing things that I haven't done in years. I have slid down water slides, sang karaoke, and worn a sundress out in public. I feel invincible and this is the best feeling in the world. I hope that in two more months I will be writing something this positive again. I am POSITIVE that I will reach my goal and I think I will reach it within a year. I am on my way to finding myself under all this fat that I have surrounded myself with. I am proud. I am excited. I am sure. And the best part is...I can see my new self (body and soul) reflected in my children's eyes. And I know that this journey is just starting. Later this month I will ride a roller coaster for the first time in over 10 years. It just keeps getting better and better.

- Trial size baby lotion or favorite lotion
- Small shampoo and conditioner
- Brush, hair ties

- Deodorant
- Insurance card and living will or health care proxy, medication list
- Your own pillow w/colored case (this will be handy for the ride home too)
- Loose clothes to wear home and a good pair of non slip sole slip on shoes…you will hate to bend over to put on shoes
- Camera in case you want to document the journey …this is an optional item
- Phone numbers in case you want to call family/friends
- Sanitary napkins (a lot of women will start their cycle right after surgery)
- Eye covering (if light bothers you), earplugs (if noise bothers you)
- Pictures of family or loved ones…This is an optional item
- Small fan …this is an optional item
- Get some type of long wooden spoon or something you can wrap toilet tissue around. If that doesn't work, get a family member to help wipe.
- A robe and house shoes to walk in the hall after surgery
- Some reading material like magazines…you won’t get through a book with all the drugs they have you on.
- CPAP machine (if Dr. requires it)

Pack your bag to go to the hospital and then remove HALF of that. You won't use it all!
Post-op List for Your Weight Loss Surgery
- Lots of small dishes to eat from
- Replace all the batteries in things you use regularly (TV control, VCR controls, cordless phone, etc)

Make sure if you are borrowing one that it has rubber grips on the feet of it though that are in good shape. You certainly don't want to slip and fall in the shower

- Whatever vitamins and supplements you plan on taking
- Protein shakes and shaker cups
- Bags of ice…for getting in fluids and making shakes cold

Well friends...I just made my first appointment with Dr. Kim (the BS). And...good news! Aetna only requires three months of supervised diet and NUT. I thought it was going to be six months so this is great!
I am soooo ready to start this journey! y only worrie is my job and what to tell them. Any suggestions? I know that they are going to make a fuss, but I have the PTO needed and FMLA, so they can't say too much. This is for me anyway...not them. I guess I should tell ya'll my starting weight. Drumroll...
286lbs. Boo. But my highest weight was like, 292..so..yeah. But today is the first day of my amazing journey! I will keep ya'll posted after I have the first appointment next week!
Much love
