Just a belated update
Oct 03, 2007
Ok, I am horrible at keeping this up to date, but you know, I have so much more enegery I am never home! On my 2 month surgiversery I was 42 lbs less. It is am amazing feeling. I can not look in the mirror and see where the weight was, but I am wearing a size 16 these days, down from a very tight 22 the day of surgery.
I have NO regrets in having my RNY. I never could have done this on my own. Like everyone else I want to wake up 5 lbs lighter every morning, but then I come back to reality...and am very happy with slow and steady.
I have had a few wow and funny moments lately...most are related to wardrobe malfunctions. I happened to be near my grandparents cemetary not to long ago and decided to stop and pull some weeds, now keep in mind this is a small country cemetary, never alot of traffic around it. I had not sprung for any new pants at this point.....so I am bent over pulling weeds and one was really giving me fits and I gave it a big tug and it gave way as well as my pants. My pants are around my knees and of course that is when the traffic jam hit...3 cars drove by before I could drop the weed and get my pants back up. That was the day I went shopping.....consider my lesson learned! Shopping is a must!

Long time no update, but things here are great! I am feeling wonderful and couldn't be happier with my decision to have this surgery!
The day of surgery I was 236, I am now 212...so my weight loss is on the slow side, but thats ok! People are starting to notice I have lost weight and that feels good. I have had one dumping episode, totally my fault. I grabbed a pudding cup one evening and dumped a little protein power in it and at it...a couple of minutes later I was in bed sweating, trying to vomit, heart beating out of my chest and cramping so bad....come to find out, I had grabbed the wrong pudding cup, it was my kiddos...not my sugar free one...wow, that will NEVER happen again. I was lucky, it only lasted about 20 minutes but left a lasting impression.
I wish I could say I was wearing smaller clothes, but I am wearing the same things, only they are baggy......but the next size smaller is just not comfortable yet...maybe in a couple of weeks!

The rest of the story from Mexico!
Aug 02, 2007
Ok, I got tired after day one so now it is time for the rest of the story! Let me just repeat, Mexico is amazing!! The rest of my hospital stay was pretty unremarkable. The care contineued to be top notch, the docs wonderful, and have I mentioned how clean everything was?
Day 4 we went to the hotel, which by the was was amazing too! The Krystal is so beautiful and HUGE. Thank goodness there were always people to take you back to your building in golf carts. The weather was very hot and humid, and there had been a tropical storm a ways off the coast so it extra humid I think.
We went down town a couple of times, getting a cab is no problem, there are so many of them. The first trip down I didn't last very long, it was to hot and I walked to much...so my hubby took me home and tucked me in for a nap and he went back for some more shopping, he did a good job of getting souviners for the kids!
The second trip downtown I did much better, the only problem we ran into at all was the restraunt we picked to eat at. We ate at bubba gumps shrimp factory, and there was not any broth of any kind on the menu at all. The only thing that looked at all like something I could attempt was a bluberry smoothie. I had them make it with lots of ice, very little yougert and no sugar. I was still a little afraid of it, so I ate about 3 small sips and gave the rest to hubby. Other than that finding broth was no trouble at all.
Coming home was not a great time, I was trying to drink water and kept getting to much air and couldn't figure out why, but at one point while standing in line I got so sick to my pouch I just knew I was going to vomit, I gagged and burped and felt better but oh how horrid. I have since figured out I can't drink water out of a bottle, I do better with it in a coffee cup...go figure.
We had a huge layover in Dallas, and by the time we got there I was getting pretty concerned about myself, I was VERY dry.....we found a deli type restaunt that had chicken noodle soup and so I got some broth whiched helped a little. When we finally got to board our plane for the last leg home it was a little warn on there.....and then all of a sudden there was no air at all circulating....and it stayed that way for 45 minutes, that was so bad, all I wanted to do was cry but I didn't want to waste the tears had I been able to make them. My husband was very upset and the people around us were so nice, the guy behind me even fanned me, but there was no excuse for an airline loading a plane like that and then making people sit there with no air circulating....will never fly American again if I can help it.
Finally landed in Northwest Arkansas and it was so good to be home, it was wonderful to see my kids and my parents! We went to my dads favorite restraunt and I ordered a chicken soup there and also some iced tea. I knew Iwasn't supposed eat and drink at the same time, but as dry as I was I knew I needed nutrition and liquid, so I was very careful and fine, I felt better after that. I now order my tea in a coffee cup with 2 ice cubes. All in all things are great!!

Ok, I have to admit I am horrible at keeping this blog up to date, so this might get to be a long post! But let me start by saying Mexico was AMAZING, and more than that Dr Joya and his staff were way more than I could have even imagined.
My husband and I got to Mexico the afternoon of the 23rd, and I really was doing fine, a little nervous but nothing bad. We cought our cab to the hospital and as soon as we walked in the door of the hospital Natalie was right there to help us with the check in process and do the inital paperwork and so on, and somewhere along the line my brain just shut down, I was in a total fog, she probably thought I was really weird, I really can't explain what the deal was with that at all. We went up to my room in the most beautiful hospital...the floors are all marble and the whole place just looked and smelled so clean. I got to my room and Natalie handed me my gown and I went in the bathroom to change and for some reason I just started crying, I am not really sure why but I am assuming nervous tears, but it seemed like from the time I put my gown on things moved pretty fast. The nurses are so good, they got my IV in one poke, and I really didn't even feel that. They did my pre op blood work, ekg and ither things and as soon as that was back another very nice Dr came in and did a quick check. My husband went downstairs to make a quick phone call and in the couple of minutes he was gone they came and got me (of course). The people in the OR were so nice and so comforting, I was introduced to everyone who would see me naked, and then I fell asleep with someone holding my hand.
Recovery was honestly the easiest recovery I have ever had, and I have had several surgeries in my life. I think the difference is they don't force you awake with meds, they let you spend the time you need sleeping while they are giving the pain meds and anti nausea meds..I was in recovery for at least 3 hours, and I had no problems at all, they were just letting me wake up. I am pretty sure I was the only person my nurse had that first night, she was so good.
Never once while I was in the hospital did I have to ask for pain meds or something for nausea, as a matter of fact, I had to ask them to spot giving me the meds wed after noon because I didn't really feel like I needed it at all, and I didn't I have not had any medication since then.

I HAVE A DATE!!!!!!!
Jul 02, 2007
OHHH MYYY Goodness, I am so excited!!! I got my financing approved and made a call to talk to the pt care coordinator about my next step...and that step was a date. I didn't realize that before I made the phone call. I am very confident in my decision to go to Mexico to have this surgery, I have heard nothing but good about Dr. Joya and his staff.
It is still frustrating to think that the insurance companies are so profit minded that they refuse to cover this much needed procedure, but I guess to put a positive spin on it, if they did approve me I wouldn't have the chance to experience mexico the way I am.
More later....

The decision is made!
May 23, 2007
Well, after much soul searching, talking to my family and looking at myself in the mirror I made a decision. I am going to Mexico. I am planning on the 3rd week of July for my Lap RNY. (It feels good to say that). I wish it were today, but there is a small issue with needing money, passports, childcare, dog sitters and so on so today won't work. But I am 7 weeks away from my "new birthday".
To say I am frustrated with healthcare in the US is an understatement. But I am sure it is a frustration most all of us have felt. I just wish someone could explain to me how it is cost effective for my insurance to pay for my heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer, GERD, high blood pressure, joint problems, sleep apena or any other weight related health issue I may develop but refuse to cover the only effective treatment to PREVENT these problems.
I will continue to post now that I have something to post..it feels so good to have made a decision!
