From the time I was a teenager, I remember haveing to "deal" with my weight. I was always 10-20 lbs heavier than most of the other girls. I started dieting in my teens, continued in my 20's, 30's and 40's! Like most everyone, I have done just about everything, from the grapefruit & egg diet to a medically supervised liquid fast. I would loose weight but I would always gain it back plus more!
Early last fall, I started kickin the idea around of doing the lap band. I talked to my mother, Shirley, and she was very excited about it. She admitted that she had wanted to ask me about it but wasn't sure what I would think. After seeing my doctor (for my blood pressure, which had been going up!), I discussed it with him and he suggested a doctor in Tulsa. After that visit, Mom had done some checking on the internet and found out that she might be able to qualify through Medicare, to have the procedure too. That is what led us to Dr. Hoehn in Shawnee Mission, KS. His practice and the program that he is in is a Center of Excellence, which is what Medicare requires.
After going to the seminar in October, I think that Mom & I both got the idea at the same time, that we didn't want the lap band and did want the Roux-en-y. We were very impressed with the presentation, Nola, Dr. Sabapathy, and especially, Dr. Hoehn. The patients, that had already been throught everything, were very inspiring and gave us hope!
I found that my insurance has a written exclusion for weight lose surgeries, but I decided to go ahead with it anyways. I knew that in just a matter of time I would also be a diabetic like my mother and her mother too. I wanted to do something now to prevent that from happening. So begins my journey to the new me!!
