Before Surgery

May 20, 2007

I am 26 years old and a wife and mother of two.  I currently weigh 335lbs.  I have been inquirering about weight lost surgery for three years because my PCP was concered for my health.  I never had health problems but I don't them in the future, so I want to get it under control.  I went to a free seminar at Elkins Park Einstein Hospital.  I was so impressed and thats when I made up my mind to have the surgery.  On friday May 25th I have my one on one with my surgeon Ramsey Dallal.  I was already told that my insurance covers the procedure 100%.  I would love to have the surgery early June.  I am only nervous about being under sedation.

Journey to get insurance approval

I have Keystone Mercy Ins. and they cover bariatric surgery 100% no deductable and no co-pay as long as your PCP refers you.  I went to my initial consultation with my surgeon Dr. Ramsey Dallal yesterday May 25,2007. He is one of the nicest Health Professionals you will ever meet.  He takes his time and explains the surgery (risk, benefits, the actual surgery)  I know I made the right choice.  i had to get my vitals taken and i lost a total of 18lbs this month, I have been trying to eat right and it paid off. So now i am down to 328 lbs. After I had my vitals done Dr. Dallal came in to talk to me and explained to me that before you can get a surgery date you have to first have the consultation, pre-op testing which is testing that occurs before operations. It varies according to your health history ; since I have no health issues exccept for my weight I had to get the basic pre-op testing done (blood work, EKG, Chest X-Ray) I am glad about that. Also, you had to attend the Lifestyle Management Course which is an out of pocket expense of $300.  This course is for your overall well being after the surgery.  It is usually done in one day and last for four to five hours.  You will meet with a certified dietician, exercise therapist and psychiarist.  Then once you have done these things they will send a letter to your insurance company and seek approval.  Once you are approved you will be given a surgery date.  Once he told me that I immediately wanted to get the ball rolling.  I gave them a $50 deposit to secure my appointment, but the secretary told me they didn't have anything until July.  I pleaded with her to look again and she said I can break the appointment into two parts come on May 29th at 1:00pm and June 14th at 9:00am.  I told her that was perfect.  Once I lefted the office I went to my Primary Hospital and got all my pre-op testing done in one day. WOW I was really on the ball yesterday.  So now all i have to do is attend my life style managment classes and wait for my date. I am more that half way their.  I AM SO EXCITED.
