First Post-op Visit

Dec 05, 2008

Had my first post-op visit on Thursday, 7 days after my surgery.  Everything checked out fine and we headed back home from Houston.  Got sick of the hotel and I wasn't going to hang around another 7 days.

Really haven't had much discomfort except the one time that I thought I felt fine and over did it.  So for those of you about to start when your doctor says take it easy...DO SO!  I felt better the next day after taking my pain meds, but still was a little sore.

Post op went well, Dr. Davis checked my stitches as a few questions and of course I had many questions and he took to time to answer them.

I have lost 15 pounds in 7 days, not bad, I'm off to a good start.  Tommorow, pureed foods...yum...I was running out of ideas on my full liquid diet so this will be a welcome change.

Well I'm back

First of all I can say that it was not what I expected.  The people at the hospital were great.  I highly reccommend University General and their staff and thank them for making things a whole lot easier.

Checked in as requested and was shuttled to my room.  Of course because of the holiday the floor I was on was consolidated so they changed my room on me and left them scrambling to get my stuff after the fact but that was the only negative.

After being taken to the room I was picked up for surgery and went down into the pre-op area to go through my vitals and recheck my information.  Got a visit from Dr. Davis and he assured me he would take good care of me.

My wife went first, I was suprised that it only took about 1 1/2 hours for the surgery.  Soon it was my turn, I told them I wanted to know how my wife was doing before they put me under and they were gracious enough to accomodate me.

The next thing I know I'm in the recovery room and coming out of my anestesia and about 1/2 later I was whisked up to my room.  in about 2 hours I actually felt well enough to get up and go for a walk so I went over the wifes room and tried to get her up.  She takes a while longer to come out of the funk of the anestesia but she got up and we went for our first walk.  I think the morphine was kicking in around that time too, gotta love that little button !

I spent the next day and half walking and getting my vitals checked.  I was able to go on clear liquids the next day, and I never thought I would say this but (ICE CHIPS ROCK)!  i was able to finally get some fluids in after we passed our "leak test".  The gas pains do suck but walking helps A LOT!

So here I am, back at the hotel and waiting for my post op visit, still on pain meds and trying to get the fluids in, which is tough when you can only drink about an ounce at a time. but I'm sure it will get easier.

All in all everything went well so far.  I'll be keeping up the liquid regimen and doing my 20 minute or more on the treadmill or maybe walking around outside.

I realize I got some challenges ahead, but no turning back now, just time to rock and roll!

Well I have arrived.  I have surgery scheduled for tommorow and the nervers have kicked in, but I'm handling it.  Today was clear liquids only but I really haven't been able to keep up with it, too nervous.

But all in all,I'm ready!.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone and I will post as soon as I can.

Just got approved!

Ok, so it took a while to get here, but here's my story.  I have been over weight most of my life (since I was 7 years old).  I have struggled with my weight and in the course of my lifetime have developed and battling diabetes and hypertension.  My weight maxed out at 306 lbs and in the course of the past year or so managed to lose 60 lbs. on a strict diet and excersise program, but have steadily gained some back.  I decided to do a gastric bypass not only to lose weight but to hopefully get rid of my diabetes and hypertension.

I am now approved for surgery on 11/26/2008, yes the day before Thanksgiving!  I feel I'm ready to do this and get on with my life.  I'm doing this for my family and mostly myself.  I have 5 kids and would like to be around for all of them as long as possible for them and my wife.  More so I would love a better quality of life and hope that this surgery, though not a cure for diabetes, will prolong my life so I can enjoy my family more.

Today I am more anxious than afraid and more determined to do this than ever before.  Hopefully the same will be true as I get closer to my date.
