I feel like I have an elephant in my gut

Apr 26, 2011

Hi everyone,

I am a serial lurker on OH.  I have posted only a couple of times.  I want to say I made it through my sleeve surgery on Good Friday....04-22-11!  Yeah!  I too had all the apprehention and pre op jitters and have to say the first 3 days of what have I freaking done to myself?!!!  I am now on day4 post op and slightly better and so encouraged by all of you and that is giving me hope.  When i read the really bad complications it scares me into submission and out of any teenytiny thought I might have of real food not that I would...  and when I read the success stories I just can't wait for that to be me!

Right now at day 4, I feel like I have an elephant in my gut.  It is soooooo bloated and rumbles like a Texas tornado.  The bloating feels like I did when i was 9 months pregnant.  In fact when I get up out of a chair or sofa I am leaning sideways just like I did when I was pregnant and pushing off the chair/sofa to keep from putting pressure on my abdomen.  It rumbles and percolates and sounds awful.  I had (TMI) explosive diahreah....pure liquid and still do altho it has calmed some.  Emphasis on some.  I called dr. and they said to eat activia and it did seem to help SOME but the bloating is killing me.  I do not have a drain tube that I hear alot of people have so maybe that is it?

Swallowing these first days has been hard because if feels like my esophogus is pinched off and I am getting these gurgles and bubbles of air that surface up after each tiny drink and it is uncomfortable.  Not really painful but definately uncomfortable.  Now my stomach is another story.... only a few sips and I am FULLLLL! not to mention the swollen abdomen where my guts are.

I am on Full liquids for 2 more days and move to pureed.  I can't wait but at the same time I can't really eat anything more than a couple tablespoons at a time.  I love to cook and have a big family where we normally have a big hot meal every night and I haven't cooked in a week and probably wont for a while.  I really have no desire right now for food because again THE ELEPHANT IN MY GUT!

Can someone tell me if this is normal and how long does it take to go down?
My High weight 12-10 was 275, pre op 248, up after surgery to 252, 4 days out it is 244.  So I was nervous to weigh especially with all this bloating but said WTH I want to know.  I can't get real exccited about the weight loss until I get rid of this elephant!

Uncertain about submitting and getting approved

Feb 18, 2011

Hello everyone in OH land!  I am in the approval process or maybe I am not officially there yet.... I am not sure.  I have been "creeping" on OH for several weeks and have gleaned so much insight and encouragement and information from all the posters here.  I am new at blogging.  But all I can do is speak from my heart and my situation.  At Thanksgiving of 2010 I ended up in the ER with palpatations which had been occuring for a few months but I was hoping they would go away.  When they didn't I was told to go to the ER.  Long story short I ended up under the care of a great Cardiologist who had me get on the scale and to my honest surprise I was at my highest weight EVER.....275 pounds!  Talk about having a heart attack!  When I left the cardiologist I stewed for a few days and realized I have to do something about my weight because as annoying and frustrating my weight has been now it is about getting healthy and being around for my family and my children.  I searched Bariatric surgeons in Atlanta and found Dr. Paul Macik.  I called and made an appointment and was in his office before Christmas 2010.  I do not know anyone who has had this surgery or any WLS before.  This is all NEW to me and has been a discovery process.  Since then I have done my 3 psych evals, 2 and will be done Tuesday with 3rd Dietician eval and have 1 more visit with Dr. Macik on March 18th.

Here is my uncertainty...  I had Kaiser Permanente for the past 11 years up until the end of 2009.  NO PCP for 2010.  Got a new PCP for this surgery Jan 2011.  He agreed to write referral letter although I am a new patient for him.  My problem is when he wrote for my records from Kaiser, my weight for 2008 was 250 lbs...(ok cause BMI 40), my weight for 2009 (the only time I went to a Dr. in 2009 was for gallbladder emergency surgery and had been sick for a month or more and my weight dropped to 236).  My weight in 2010 was a high weight of 275 and now 266.  Did you follow that?  Confusing I know but my point is for insurance purposes the only weight I have recorded in 2009 was at the time of my gallbladder surgery where I had been very ill for some time.  My BMI drops to 36 or 37 at that weight.  I am so scared this is going to prevent Aetna from approving me for this much needed surgery.  I know my weight was much higher for most of 2009 but it is not recorded anywhere.  And that weight quickly rebounded as recorded in 2010 to 275 lbs which is what started me on this journey.  I am now on metroprolol for High HR and palpitations.  I am hoping this will be enough for a firm arguement for my surgery.  I am placing so much hope on this procedure and am ready to do the work necessary!
