Soft And Lovely
One Month Of Training Complete
Jul 07, 2008
I love exercise! I don't always enjoy doing it but I love how it makes my body feel and I love what it does for my mood! It's also cool to see and feel my progress as I chart it. I love participating on the exercise and fitness board. I feel like I "belong" there even though I'm nowhere near the level of most of those guys yet.
My stats now at the beginning of my second month of training are:
walk/run is now moving up to a 2 run/1 walk pace and I can now go 2.5 miles. Hoping by the end of this month I'll have upped my walk run ratio a bit and perhaps feel ready to walk/run a full 5K (3 miles)
bike is WAY up from my 4 mile start to starting 12 mile rides this week! I think perhaps the aim by the end of the month will be 14-16 miles.
swimming... yeah I have my first tri in February so I reallly need to hook this up sooner than later!

End of Second Training Week
Jun 22, 2008
When you're as decoditioned as I was, improvements come fast! I am ready to bump up the runs to 1/1 walking and running. By Friday the 2/1 walk run was definitely not easy but it took a while to work up a real sweat. So for the next two weeks it'll be 1/1 for 20 mins. Then maybe walk 5 then 1/1 for 5 more? Yeah that sounds good. I want to work up to 1/1 for 30 mins but I don't think I'll be there on Monday. Anyway like I said at the beginning, I have had to bump up the intensity on my stationary bike, and I'm ready to take my outside bike rides to 40 mins as opposed to 30. Today is a day of rest and I feel antsy to get out and do something. But I will not. No, I'm not working out intensely or anything but I still need to get into the habit of resting my body once a week just to make sure I don't end up injured or end up not getting the results I want. So I'll chill (as the kids are saying these days).
First Swim

Erg... my lame front crawl/freestyle thingy couldn't even make it half a length! I basically dog paddled up to one end and back stroked down to the other. I gotta get some help and I gotta build stamina!!
Training Week 2 Begins
Jun 17, 2008
So I ran on Monday on a track for the first time. I think I'm going to run there tomorrow too. It gives me the most accurate measure of my progress. Plus the cushie surface is probably better for my joints at this point. It shows I am actually walk/running about a 15 minute mile. I'll take it! Running still isn't really fun for me but I LOVE how I feel after I'm done (yay endorphins). Acutally I must say that last Friday's run was almost fun though. I started running and suddenly I became aware that my body wanted to pick up the pace, just a hair but still. I wanted to go faster!... ME!!! Yesterday's run I found I could start the running interval at an even faster clip but I couldn't maintain that pace for the full interval and I had to slow down before the minute was up.
Today's bike ride was the hardest I've done so far. It was more hilly on this end than it is on the opposite end of the trail. Even though a more conditioned rider probably wouldn't detect any hills at all I sure felt them! Thursday I will start on the other end and see if I increase my distance (4.5 miles).
Tomorrow will also be my first swim workout. I wonder what the swim plus run will feel like.
PS Camping with my daughter was GREAT!! She is such a fun little person. Near the end of the trip I was getting a little worn out from the constant questions and chatter from the four year old mouth and mind but I think that was more exhaustion than anything. We had a good time and we'll probably do it again before summer's end.

Concerned
Jun 12, 2008
I hear about people not eating enough and they stop losing weight. I am concerned because I can't seem to get in very many calories this week for whatever reason. I just have no desire to eat really. Nothing sounds good to me. As soo as they're done I'm going to force some chicken nuggets down my gullet just because they're high calorie and I haven't eating much today. I just want to be able to eat enough to support my weight loss and enough so I don't get sick!
Mid Week Training Report
Jun 11, 2008
Today I took my second run of the week. My last one will be on Friday. Today's run was tougher for me. It just felt a bit more like work then it did on Monday. This is a typical cycle for me. The very first workout usually isn't that bad but the second one is a challenge! Anyway I was really proud of the results. I went over 2.5 miles and averaged a 12 minute mile or 5mph. That's longer than the 3K I signed up to do. If I keep up that pace I should finish my first race in under half an hour!
Yesterday the bike was an absolute HOOT!!! I had a great time getting in my 20 minute ride just on the streets around here. tomorrow I'll do it on the trail to get an idea how far and how fast I go. I think the trail may be hillier than my block but that is probably a good thing.
I still can't see myself really racing or anything, but I love the way training makes me feel!

The Training Begins!
Jun 09, 2008
And so, at 10am this morning, in dirty shorts and t-shirt, black men's work socks, and shoes that are not only old but also REALLY wrong, I went out and did my first 2/1 walk run (don't worry, I'm going to a running store tomorrow). I am so proud of myself I'm fit to bust! I completed 10 cycles or 30 minutes. Right now I'm sitting here stinking out loud! I need to shower but I had to stop and write about it first.
Tomorrow is the official start of my bike/toning phase of training. I bought a stationary bike but I'm going to get some money out of my savings account and get a cheapo mountain bike for outside training and also cash for good running shoes too!
I'm trying really hard to up my intake to 1200 calories a day. I'll need it now that I've made this exercise commitment. It's hard to do this soon out, especially if you really want to stick to better choices.
I will be attempting to sign up for 3 local races today that are two months apart. That should keep me motivated through December.

Long Rambly Post From One W/LOTS More Energy!
Jun 05, 2008
Well last month I lost almost 12 pounds. I am not burning up the pavement with my weight loss but it is coming off slowly but surely! I was just the teeniest bit disappointed that it wasn't some HUGE number but really that was pretty darn good! If I continue to lose at this pace I will probably take less than a year to be at goal!
Either mirrors are individually psycho or I am! Some mirrors I look in and I think "Wow I'm getting skinny!" And some mirrors I look in and say "Man! after 52 pounds it doesn't look like anything's changed!" I don't know if it's the mirror itself or if it's just my obese brain trying to get used to the changes and having a hard time reconciling the body image in my brain with the image in the glass.
I wore a cute sundress today. Guys were checking me out. It was kinda cool.
I also got smiled at and talked to by many men in the store. While I was there I picked up some of that DaVinci syurp everyone's been raving about but I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. Stick it in a protien shake maybe? We'll see.
I got myself a medical alert bracelet. It seems to be working out okay and few people have commented on it. I just hope the info on it is complete enough for EMT crews to understand. When I reach goal weight I may get one that fits more print so I don't have to abreviate so much.
Next week I'm gonna start the couch to 5K training. I have this crazy idea that it'd be cool if I could actually do a (small) triathlon when I reach my goal weight. Not sure how long I'll last on this hairbrained scheme but for now it's sounding mighty cool! Learning how to run would be a step in that direction. I also want to buy a bike but it's hard to find ways to ride right now b/c my daughter can't ride and she's too big for an infant seat and I'm too weak to pull her in a trailer deal. So I might hold off on that purchase. As my post probably shows, I am feeling much more energy now and I'm ready to do stuff!
Saturday begins the summer fun season for my daughter and she's taking her first summer class of the year (Tae Kwon Do). She's also got dance and swimming. I love that I have the energy to take her to these things and I love that we are now walking together. We walk down to the pool most nights and feed the fish and watch the big kids go off the diving board for a while. It's good bonding time and she's responding well to it.
We are also going on our first "family vacation"! That's right, I am packing up myself and a 4 year old and we are going on a weekend camping trip at Jelly Stone Park. It could be a disaster but it'll probably be fun! Only one way to know for sure! I'll be sure to give you all a full report when we get back.

Impromptu Hike/Picnic
Today is Memorial Day. My sitter forgot to tell me she was closed today. I wasn't working but I did plan to take my kiddo there because I have no baby's daddy and sometimes I like to pay for "joint custody". So I can get a break from the endless stream of questions and chatter. Anyway, we got there and the door was locked. They opened it a crack to say "Sorry we're closed today" and that was that. I was a bit peaved that she didn't tell me but hey, sitters need days off too.
Anyway now we had a day together and no plans to fill it. As I was driving home I hit upon the idea of taking in the sights at one of our fairly close and very beautiful state parks. We came home, packed a picnic lunch then headed out to hike some forrest trails. It was lovely! We saw all kinds of plant life and bugs and we heard a wide variety of birds singing. This is a very new behavior for me since surgery. I would never have done this two months ago!
Feeling Real Control
It's interesting what it feels like when you really do make a lifestyle change as opposed to a diet which you only call a lifestyle change. I went to a wedding on Saturday (got to dust of my minister skills because I actually married the couple). Normally on a diet that sort of situation brings all sorts of anxiety. How much to eat? Cake or no cake? What and when to drink? This time it was a complete non-issue. I didn't give over eating a second thought because I couldn't have done it if I tried! I simply shared a small buffet plate with my daughter and was happy and satisfied. There was food left on it when we were done just like there was on all the plates of all the naturally thin friends I shared a table with. I actually felt normal for a change. No need to polish off one plate and go back for seconds, I just ate my fill and stopped. I love that sense that I am in control now!
Size 18 Dress
I tried one on when I was shopping for the wedding. There was no W after the size and it fit!!! I was thrilled. Next stop, misses size pants!

Someone Checked Out My Butt Today
May 22, 2008
I haven't really got anything much to add to the title. It just made me feel kinda cute! I was wearing baggy jeans too! Maybe I should pay more attention when I'm wearing my clothes that fit. Folks could be noticing me more than in think.
