Update April 23, 2013

Apr 23, 2013

I haven't updated since July 2010, however, my weight has continued to be one of the main areas of focus.  I initially had the RNY surgery because of the fact that it should have taken care of my diabetes.  My surgeon said that it was a cure for 95% of diabetics, he told me 2 years later that I was one of the 5% that it didn't work for.

I am still happy with my weight control at this point.  I was 204.5 when I had the surgery and today my weight is 161.  My diabetes is well controlled and I feel great.

I am 71 now and do things I would never have dreamed of 5 years ago.  My husband and I ride Harleys (mine is a trike) and have fun enjoying each other and our lives.

I still believe this surgery is the best thing I ever did for myself.

Update - July 25, 2010

Jul 25, 2010

It has been 2-1/2 years since my RNY surgery.  I am 7 pounds from goal.  I reached the goal the first year, but then gained 15 pounds back.  I am back on track and feel great!  I work at our church as part-time secretary 4 hours a day (Monday - Friday).  That in addition to the purchase we made last year of a 2009 Harley trike, has kept me busy.  I never dreamed I would have been able to do all that I do now at age 68!  This surgery was the best thing I ever did for myself and would do it again in a heart beat!

Update

Feb 15, 2009

It has been over a month since I posted last.  I went to my Primary Doctor last week and I have gained 5 pounds in the last six months!   My A1C also jumped from 6.2 to 8.2!  He said he couldn't understand why 5 pounds would make such a difference.  I told him the only thing that was different is that I had stopped exercising.  He said that would explain the jump.  So, now I realize not exercising is not an option for me!  I plan to go to the Y tomorrow and join. I also plan to get a trainer and hit the ground running.  I'll keep my progress posted here.

Update

Jan 11, 2009

I never intended to wait this long to post again.  I am still feeling great.  My weight has leveled off and I am weighing between 150 - 155 pounds.  I am satisfied with this.  I can comfortably wear size 10's and 12's.  At sometime it would be great to have a tummy tuck but I would only do this if Medicare would pay for it.  Probably sometime this coming year I'll look into that.  For now I'm content.  I have never regretted my decision to have this surgery and would do it again in a heart beat!

Things are still great!

Nov 05, 2008

I haven't updated this for a couple of months.  I have stayed so busy there's hardly any time to do everything I want.

On the 6th of October, I took on the duties of Secretary at our church.  I work 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.  I absolutely love it because most of what I do is on the computer--such as publishing the bulletin, a monthly newsletter, and preparing slides for the worship service.

With my new energy since my surgery, I find I wake up about 5 AM and go pretty steady until around 4 pm.  I usually stop and take a short nap or just rest.  We purchased a hot top last month and have it installed now.  This really helps with my arthritis in various places.

We have also placed our order for a Harley 3-wheel motorcycle.  We won't be able to get it until between April - June of 2009.  There is a waiting list.  We had to pay a deposit but that's ok.  We're so excited about this.  We're already planning where we'll go!

I had a kidney infection a couple of weeks ago.  My doctor prescribed Cipro and to my dismay my sugar readings shot thru the roof!  I was so disappointed and then I learned that Cipro can do that.  My doctor put me back on Lantus temporarily and that seems to be taking care of it.

Update . . .

Sep 14, 2008

Well, I finished my fence project and sure enough my back did get better.  My next project was painting the floor of my husband's shop (about a 25 x 25).  It looks really good and it sorta inspired him to organize his shop.  I've now moved my efforts inside and getting ready for company we have coming in the next 1 - 3 weeks (two different batches).

My weight has continued to just hang around a little over 50 pounds lost.  If I never lose any more I am thrilled to be where I am.  I wore a new outfit to church this morning--a size 10 blazer with a pair of size 10 pants.  Both fit with ample room left!  I never dreamed I'd ever see a size 10 again!

Getting There!

Aug 26, 2008

I still feel sooooooo good!  I have been working on a project I started a few weeks ago.  That is pressure washing our privacy fence and then putting a stain/sealer on it.  During this I started having really bad pains between my shoulder blades.  So much so that on the advice of my daughter I went to see my doctor.  He took xrays of my back which came back negative.  He then had me do an ultrasound of my gallbladder which also came back negative.  I have decided the problem lies with the pressure washing.  I will just stay on the pain medication the doc prescribed until I get thru with this project.

Our son, Steve, flew in from Encino, CA last Thursday for a few days (Thursday until Monday).  We had a great visit with him and absolutely packed every minute while he was here.  It is always so wonderful to have all the kids together.

Still On My Way

Aug 09, 2008

I feel so good since my surgery.  I am down now to only 2 prescription medications--my cholesterol med and a harmone pill.  I have tons of energy.  I used to sleep until around 9 AM and then would drag myself from bed and try to make it through the day.  I now get up anywhere from 5:30 AM to 7 AM.  I usually go workout at the fitness center first thing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday or go walk in my neighborhood for 30 minutes most every day.  I can work in my yard now--even run the weedeater (which I didn't have strength for before.)  It's so great to feel GREAT!  Thank the good Lord!

I just recently changed my goal--I had originally set 130 pounds, but now believe that would be too thin for me.  I have changed it to 140 pounds.  I am at 158 now and can wear size 10 and 12.  That would put my goal BMI at 24.7.

Most Goals Met

Jul 12, 2008

Since June 20th, I have hovered around the 165 mark.  It's easy to get discouraged until I back off and realize what I have already accomplished.  When I started this journey, my main goal was to conquer diabetes and hopefully my high blood pressure.  I have done that!  My blood sugar now averages around 117.  That is a major accomplishment!  Too, I am off of all high blood pressure medication and my blood pressure runs around 114 over 69.  In addition, I have lost 40 pounds and feel really comfortable in size 12 and 14 clothes.   To sum all of this up, I have decided to quit obsessing about losing pounds and just enjoy where I am and how healthy I am now.  My energy level is almost off the charts!  The additional 34 pounds that I want to lose will come off in time because I am sticking to the plan and expect to the rest of my life.  I am just a little over 3 months out, so it will happen!  I am so thankful that God has allowed me to be in this place!

Still on My Journey

Jul 03, 2008

I seem to be stuck at this 40 pounds lost mark.  I have been exercising regularly.  I workout at Sonya's Fitness Center 3 times a week and try to walk at least 30 minutes every day.  I just hope I'm losing inches and maybe gaining muscle.  I'm really enjoying the exercising, however.  Instead of using the treadmill I have been walking with JoJo, my little Silkie.  She loves to walk and gets so excited when I reach of the leash--she begins to just turn in circles until it almost makes me dizzy!

As is our custom Pam and her family will come to our house for a cookout tomorrow.  This year we are eating healthy--no hot dogs, etc.  We're having grilled chicken breasts with steamed broccoli and califlower.  I may throw in some corn on the cob for the girls and guys, but the other things are great for Pam and me.
