BOTTOM LINE

Jul 17, 2010

I HAVE DROPPED SOME WEIGHT BECAUSE I MOVED TO NEW YORK, WHERE ONE IS FORCED TO WALK EVERYWHERE!  AND THAT IS ACTUALLY A GREAT THING FOR US BARIATRIC PATIENTS.  THE BOTTOM LINE I HAVE FOUND IS THAT TO GET TO THE GOAL WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF, ONE HAS TO DO THE SAME DAMN THING THEY HAD TO DO BEFORE SURGERY:  EXCERCISE AND GOOD NUTRITION.  WHICH IS WHY I WISH I KNEW THIS BEFORE SURGERY AS MUCH AS I KNOW NOW CAUSE I WOULD HAVE NEVER HAD THIS HORRIBLE THING DONE TO ME!!!

Need for Alcohol

Feb 22, 2010

I wanted to see if anyone could shine light on an issue i've been having recently.  I'm a couple years out from my gastric bypass surgery and I have the desire to drink to make myself feel better.  Almost a addiction transfer, if you will.  Before my surgery, food was my comfort.  It would take me away from my problems and make me feel so much better.  But, I can't do that anymore because I can barely eat.  AND I'M SO HAPPY ABOUT THAT!!!
However, I've been in search of a new thing that I can do that can put me at ease.  But, I heard that drinking frequently is not good after surgery and can cause liver problems.  Can anyone shine light on this and discuss their take on drinking and what they've done to otherwise be happy when out in a social/bar setting?  Thanks!

Experiences Since Surgery

For the first time in 3 years, I am below 300 lbs!!!  I still have a ways to go for my goal weight but I've been excercising much more the past month and the weight is coming off that much quicker while working out.  It's nice that I've been cleared by my surgeon to have no restrictions in my excercise regimen- even weights.  Happily, I am no longer classified as "morbidly obese"  My next goal will be to lose the "obese" title all together and never be in the 300's ever again in my life.

It's been almost 3 1/2 months.  The toughest thing about the gastric bypass was the first month out.  Mentally, it was hell.  I had terrible thoughts of regret.  But, things have become so much better!  In the beginning, I guess it was a mental withdrawl from the food that i used to eat.  I was starving (more mentally than physically); missing the old lifestyle.  But, now i can eat a lot more.  And I am happier.  I've lost some tremendous weight, and I am most amazed of the small quantities of food that it takes to fill me up.  The other day, I told a friend, "I've never gone to Subway and ordered just the 6 inch sub; back in the day, I wouldn't even be satiated by the foot-long."  Now, i have trouble just eating part of the 6-inch.

I'm over a month and a half out and i'm happier because i can eat a lot more now.  I wonder if that could be bad though, because what am i going to be able to eat 6 months from now?  However, i have more energy than i've had in years, i've lost 35 lbs, i'm off some medications that were weight related, and overall, i'm happier.

Things are getting better; some of that damn gas starting to go away.  Starting to realize soon after drinking it is NOT a good idea to lay on my left side.  Something to just put out there- i'm a while out from eating real food, but late at nite as i always have in the past i get a MENTAL craving for letting myself go and eat a lot.  late nite Taco Bell, 7-Eleven, you name it.  Now i realize though that I CANT do it.

After being denied by my insurance company, BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD ILLINOIS, i was surprised just a couple weeks later when i got a letter in the mail that I won the appeal.  I guess that it helps that the hospital and I bothered the living hell out of the insurance people and were very persistant.  So, instead of having my gastric bypass surgery on March 7th, I was rescheduled for April 10th.
