"My first impression of Dr. Northup was that he was a bit more serious than I expected. He got right to the issues, MY high blood pressure, my my sleep apnea, my high colesterol and so on. As you may guess I have alot of medical problems that can be controled with weight loss. But the most important thing that he said to me was that "this is not a quick fix, you have to want this and have to work for it or you are wasting my time and yours and potentually your life!!!". Well as you may guess that scared me. He seemed a bit reserved, until I started asking questions then I found out what I wanted to know. Well that was is this man just in it for the cash or does he want to help. The answer to that was he is a simple man from West Virginia and a family history of obesity, and he wants to help!His staff completely blew me away. Anna Miller the nurse corridinator is the nicest and most caring person I have met in years, and her Husband Mike Miller the "insurance man" as I jestingly refer to him as is also. June 20th 2004 was my 1st appointment with Dr. Joe and it is only September 23 2004 and I am only 1 month give or take from my surgery. The program that you go threw with UVA will amaze you they give you so much information it is unreal. The after care was a worry of mine because I live 4 hours away from UVA but Anna the Godsend that she is made sure that I have proper aftercare arranged. Not just my PCP but a specialist just 35 minutes away. They also help you find a gym or set up an exercise program to follow up with befor the surgery. I have that already set up. I was a bit scared when we talked about the risks. They deffinately would not be good car salesmen!!! The risks are scary and boy do they let you know, and the befor and after pictures aren't like here they scare you, skin and scars and getting you prepared for cosmetic surgery if needed after. I started to run away but at this point I am still here. Well guys I hope I have helped and I will get back to you soon, with an update on bedside manners and competence, I hope!! COMPETENCE is what I am waiting to up date you on. "
