I grew up at a fairly normal weight until just after puberty, but then despite being very physically active, started gaining weight.  It wasn't until I was in my late 20's that I was diagnosed with extreme hypothyroidism and later PCOS, both of which contribute to low metabolism and weight gain.  Diets I tried off and on did not sustain any weight loss.  I remained very physically active until I shattered my right heel in an accident and could no longer play tennis or run.  At my highest I weighted about 287.  I've had multiple medical issues from obesity as well as additional non-obesity related health concerns.  I have type 2 diabetes (controlled with diet and exercise), asthma, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, PCOS, and myeloproliferative disease.  At one time I was diagnosed with leukemia, but it seems to have gone into remission.

I have a huge family history of heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, and diabetes.  My Mom has also had cancer.  My husband died of cancer at the age of 42.  I realized I HAD to do something to increase my chances to be around to raise my daughter who was only five when my husband, her father, died.  It really hit home as I helped nurse my Mom who had suffered three different episodes of strokes and one quintiple heart bypass surgery that landed her in the hospital and then inpatient rehab.

It was time to make a committed effort to reduce my obesity related risks of death.  Three years ago I dedicated myself to lose weight once and for all.  I lost about 44 pounds over two years, then stalled for a year.  Finally just after my 50th birthday, I talked to my PCP who ended up being my best advocate.  That was late July 2006.  Surgery is scheduled for February 15th, 2007.  I am grateful for this additional tool to help me reach my goal of a healthier me.
