Takeysha: How. about trying to educate your family? Morbid obesity is a disease like cancer and diabetes. It has GENETIC causes. It is BIOLOGICAL. Environmental factors do contribute to the problem, just as smoking contributes to lung cancer. Your family would not deny you treatment for cancer would they?? They wouldnt blame you for it, even if you DID smoke. Telling you NOT to treat the obesity is like telling a diabetic Not to take their insulin. The ONLY long term treatment for morbid obesity is the surgery. Its not magic.... its treatment. It has risks and benefits plus you will only lose about 70% of your extra weight. There are risks... but my surgeon told me I am at greater risk remaining obese. Duke University in NC has a great web site all about the research and on obesity. You could print out some medical infor and try to educate your family. If that does not work, you have to do what is best for you. You have the support of you AMOS family. We all know what it is like to live in a huge body. God Bless you!

I saw your message and just wanted to tell you that there is nothing you can do to convince people. BUT, you should not have to convince anyone. This is a decision for YOU by YOU. Just tell them that everyday when you get in a car, walk down the street, etc anything could happen and you could be gone just as suddenly. Instead of being unsupportive they should applaud your courage.

Takeysha Hello and Welcome~~~Sorry that you are not getting the support that you need. The jouney to wls is not always an easy one. I have chosen not to tell anyone except my husband and my 2 girls, they are in their 20's. I really do not need to hear everyone telling me what they think. I have chosen a good dr and feel confident about the surgery. It's not to say that at times I have mixed feeling, but as you have said--I too, do not want to side on the sidelines of life. I want to be a part of life, every second. I wish you all the very best on this journey. Good Luck and may all your dreams come true!!
