The things I've learned in seven years

Nov 19, 2010

I guess this really isn't a blog per say, but something I learned on my own and have observed from watching others who have had the surgery.

Mourn the loss of "old friends" they are dead and gone, never to return.  I have several people in my life who have had weight loss surgery and at least three of them got very depressed following their surgery, two have ended up on medication for depression. I found for myself I had to say goodbye before the surgery to my "old friends" Big Mac, Baklava, Krispy Creme and 10 pound Bag of Sugar per month. You could say my "old friends" were on life support and their prognosis was terminal. Before my surgery I ate and enjoyed the company of all my "old friends" but this was also my opportunity to say goodbye, knowing they would all soon be dead never to return. After my surgery I still missed my "old friends" but because I started the mourning process before my surgery I was able to keep it in perspective and not become depressed because I knew before my surgery that my old friends would be dead and I would have to make new ones,(human ones and figurative ones). Seven years later Big Mac, Baklava, Krispy Creme and 10lb Bag of sugar are still dead and gone and have been replaced by new ones who offer me a much better and happier future, my real friends are people who have supported my efforts to stay on track and live a healthier life not trying to side track me by resurrecting my "old friends". Also my other "new friends" are Self-motivation, Self-esteem and Self-love which are so much better than anything my "old friends" could offer.

So many don't say goodbye and mourn the loss of their "old friends" but wait on their "old friends" to return that they never meet the "new ones."
