Eyesurgery again and halfways to goal.

Sep 18, 2009

How many times haven't I said to myself, seeing the results of my WLS and it's effect on my diabetes, that I should have had the surgery at least 10 years ago.

Diabetes has taken it's toll on my eyes and I have advanced stage of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. I have had laser treatments and eye surgery (vitrectomy) in my left eye. The surgery went well and was successful in the sense that it stabilized the eye. But I had already lost so much vision that it's now 20/400. So I'm in fact legally blind in that eye.

I have relied on my good, right eye, but lately I have had several bleedings and there's a smudge right across my central vision. Often when the blood sugar rapidly improve there's a risk of the retinopathy becoming worse for a period and with increased retinal bleedings.

I was in Winnipeg for an assessment in July, but the specialist said that the surgery is so risky and carry the possibility of becoming blind. They only do it when the benefits outweigh the risks. I had an appointment with my eye doctor in Thunder Bay and he strongly recommended that I had the surgery a.s.a.p. and send a fax to Winnipeg. But since it was not considered emergency surgery that I should not expect anything before mid October.

So me and my husband went for our Lake Superior Circle Tour. That was an amazing trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from the Thunder Bay eye doctor's office and they said that they had received a fax from Winnipeg, dated Sept. 11 and I was scheduled for surgery on Sept. 15. Their office had been closed Friday and Monday and she didn't see the fax until Tuesday morning.

Oooppppsssss! I had to make a quick call to Winnipeg and talked to a secretary who must have had the Monday morning blues, because she was rather annoyed that nobody had told her the fax had not been received until that morning. Like it was my fault. Finally, I was given Sept. 21 for the pre-surgery assessment and if everything is OK I will have surgery the next day. That way I don't have to go back and forth to Winnipeg.

So I ask you friendly people of OH to send me some good, healing vibes and some prayers to whoever you believe in. Thanks for listening and if you are considering surgery and have diabetes. Don't hesitate, do it now and you will have a good chance of avoiding the diabetic complications like eye problems, heart problems, kidney problems ans so forth.

I just noticed on my ticker that I'm actually halfways to my goal.  I have lost 50% of my excess weight in 5 months (incl. 2 weeks on liquids prior to surgery). Sometimes I feel that I loose so slowly compared to many others on this board. Som people have lost 100lbs just a couple of months out, but then I have to remind myself that we all lose in different paces and that I have to look at how many percent of excess weigh I have lost.

So yay, I'm doing good. My coworkers and people around has started to comment my weightloss. They have probably noticed for some time, but haven't said anything.

So far my diabetes has become more manageable. I have completely cut out insulin and is on Metformin and a babydose of Glyburide. One of my blood pressure meds had to be discontinued and I'm only on the lowest dose of another. My moderate sleep apnea is gone and I don't have to use the machine anymore. The backpain is reduced from very bad to tolerable. But my periods are now periods from the deepest pits of Hell. Hormon changes and perimenopause is to blame for that I guess. My doc is on the ball here and we may try Mirena IUD since it works only locally.

I'm halfways to goal............and only 10 pounds away from Onederland.

This entry is a copy of two posts I recently made. Reading the posts I found that they are kind of an update too.

I'm a Loser and proud of it.

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

It has been a while since I have posted anything. I have good days and not so good days. Some days I feel nauseous most up the day and puke up every morsel i put in my mouth.

I do have a tendency to eat a bit to fast and not chew sufficiently. We are supposed to chew at least 25 times until the food has an almost pureed consistency.

My blood sugars are around 10 and I don't use any insulin anymore. Just the Metformin for my diabetes. My blood pressure has been a bit low at times and my medication dosages have to be changed soon. I already had to cut my Bisoprolol for high blood pressure in half.

I haven't been using the CPAP machine for a while either. My husband says that I don't snore anymore. My sleep is very improved too. Around 10pm I start to feel sleepy and go to bed around 10:30 to 11ish. Within 10 minutes I'm fast asleep and I don't wake up until the darn alarm clock goes off in the morning.

I pee much less than before even though I drink at least 6-8 cups of fluids a day. It seems that my body uses every valuable drop to the max. When I was younger (before I hit 28) I used to pee only 3-4 times a day. Now I'm back to that again.

I was a heavy caffeine drinker before. I weaned myself off caffeine cold turkey when I had my surgery. The pain meds took care of my withdrawal head ache too. I start to think that the caffeine may have been responsible for my frequent trips to the washroom and sleep problems.

I still love my coffee, but have switched to decaff. It taste the same and it doesn't give me acid reflux as the Crystal Light or other tangy drinks does.

Last weekend I vacuumed and washed the floors at home. This is the first time in a while that I have been able to do that without having to rely on heavy painkillers and sit on my office chair with wheels. I even did some light dusting after.

I have noticed that I freeze more now. That's promising for the summer, because I don't have to feel overheated and ready to melt when the temperature go over 20 Celsius. Hopefully, I will even like the heat.

We had snow yesterday and it's still a bit nippy around here. But I know from experience that the end of June, July, August and part of September can be very hot and humid. Most of all I hate the mosquitoes and other flying blood suckers.

Now I lose about 5lbs a week. I expect it to slow down later, but hope that I at least will lose around 10lbs a month. I know that I have to increase my exercise and physical activity to make that happen.

Surgery is over and done with.

May 08, 2009

Long time no see. The surgery is over and done with. We arrived in Duluth Sunday evening on April 26 and checked in. I had to be at the hospital at 8:30am Monday morning. I had to fast from midnight. Water was OK until 6:30am.

My husband and I arrived at the hospital and I was registered and was given a small room with a very nice recliner. They took lots of blood tests and asked lots of questions. My surgery almost got canceled due to a toe that had a small open sore.

Fast forward.......I woke up in the post-operation ward woozy and in lots of pain. My husband was there too. Later on they transferred me to ICU where I was to stay for 24 hours because I was considered high-risk. I was hooked up to a pain pump there...Thank God for that.

The next day I was transferred to a regular ward. I was still in a lot of pain, but managed to walk around quite a bit. Due to a warm, stuffy room and a terrible bed I didn't sleep much. I ended up walking around and relaxing in a recliner in the nice and cool living room. Luckily I was able to get in lots of liquids and because of that the surgeon decided to discharge me the next day.

We relaxed in the hotel and started our long drive on Friday morning. First stop was Thunder Bay where we did some shopping. I was driving my shopping card under the influence of Oxycontin and was ahead of my husband. He was amazed over me speed.

The next day we drive home and I was so happy to finally be in my own house again. Sleep in my own bed and slouching on my own couch. The pain was and still is there, but it's not so bad anymore.

Since I started my liquid diet and up to this day I have lost a total of 30 pounds. 20 pound before surgery and 10 pounds after surgery. I recon that I will be able to go back to work on Monday. My supervisor and I have agreed that I can work half days if I feel that I need to.

We have to go back to Duluth coming Thursday for my two weeks follow up appointment with the RN and dietitian.

72 hours to go.

Apr 25, 2009

It's Saturday April 25 and the time is 11:51. In 72 hours I will be on my way to Loserville. I'm doing laundry and if I manage to get off this puter (and not move over to the couch) I will do some other much needed house work.

We will start early in the morning and we have about 8 hours drive ahead of us. There will be a short stay in Thunder Bay so that we can rest a bit and have lunch. Yeah, well hubby will do the eathing and I will have my oh so delicious shake .

We will stay at Holiday Inn Downtown.

Uh, I need to get my nails done after. I'm back to my nailbiting again....there did some filing. I'm a bit exited too. I have been to Norwegian hospitals and one Canadian. This will be my first stay in an American one and it will be interesting to see the difference. You see patient rooms on TV, but they are always private and look like luxury suits in a hotel. I doubt OHIP pays for that.

Now down to the basement and take out the first load from the dryer. Next blog will probably be when I arrive in Duluth.

Oh, one thing before I leave....my doc when she gave me the A1C results got the numbers backwards. It's not 9.7%, but 7.9% and just below the max. All the worry last week was for nothing.

The countdown has started.

Apr 20, 2009

April 17, 2009

10 days to my surgery. That is if everything goes well. There have been some problems that might postpone the surgery a couple of weeks.

My doc phoned on Saturday with my blood test results and chest x-ray result. I have pneumonia, not a very severe one, but nevertheless I have a respiratory infection brought on by my cold. I was started on antibiotics the same day. The pharmacy waited for me with my meds even though they had closed one hour earlier. Talk about service.

My A1C is currently 9.7%. The surgeon said they don't do surgery unless the A1C is 8% or less. My blood sugars have been normal and stable the last 4 weeks or so, but before that they were out of whack.

I have phoned Duluth and I'm waiting for them to phone me. Today is day 5 of my liquid diet. This is certainly not easy and I have to remind myself over and over again that this is temporary and that after the surgery my appetite will be reduced if not non-existent.

So my dear OH folks cross all your fingers and toes and pray to whoever and whatever you believe in.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you, folks. Duluth returned my call and the nurse got a chance to talk with Dr. Pitt. He was concerned about my A1C level and will consult Dr Medlin to get his opinion. The nurse said that Dr Medlin usually postpone the surgery 3 months to see if the A1C has improved by then.

I did explain to that my blood sugars have been within the normal range for the last 4-5 weeks and that I treat it with Metformin, insulin and carbohydrate controlled diet.

Hopefully, Dr Pitt will be able to talk with Dr Medlin today so that I can get an answer or at least some indication of what next. If not I have to wait to over the weekend.

April 20, 2009

I phoned Duluth this morning and the RN wasn't at her desk. I left a message for her to call me and she has been very good at returning her calls before. She probably is trying to get hold of Dr Pitt and Dr Medlin to get their decision. Oh, this waiting game is driving me nuts.

The fructosamine test. The problem is that the lab here has to send it out and the answer comes back in 10 days or so. Way too late. Still on the liquid diet. The only fun thing about that diet is going on the scale. Down 10 pounds in 7 days...wooohooo.

I just got off the phone with Duluth and they have decided to go on with the surgery on the 27.  *Insert Happy Dance here* I will get a pre-surgery phone call on Friday and on Sunday we will be on the road to Skinniness.

My blood sugars have been good for a while and this last week it has been on the low side without me taking my fast acting insulin before my meals. I take 60 units of Lantus (24 hours slow-acting insulin) at bedtime and that take care of my sugars the next day. I may even have to go down on my Lantus dosage because I don't want to go to low. This morning I was 4.1 and before lunch I was 3.8 and that's very close to hypoglycaemia. I test myself every time I have to drive. Thank you folks for all your prayers.

Consult in Duluth Jan 14 and 15, 2009

Jan 22, 2009

The weather was perfect when we went to Duluth. It was sunny and the roads were perfect. But it was cold, 40 below C.

I had my appointment with the RN at 3pm, but went to the hospital at 2pm to be registered. What a view from the waiting area on 4th floor...you can see over Duluth and Lake Superior.

We had a nice talk and she weighed me and measured my height. My height is the only number that's constant. My mantra is: "I don't weight to much, but I'm to short for my weight". In the evening we went to a mall and found a restaurant. It was one of those buffetstyle ones. Oh they had lots of goodies. I checked out the site and they had good advice of what to choose from their dishes if you were watching what you were eating. The site and sign at the restaurant said that it's one price for all regardless. They did have a take out offer. You get a container and can pick whatever you want that fits in the container for half price.

The next day was the consult with dr Pitt and the dietician. We first had a group consult were he informed about the surgery. Same stuff as I have been reading on the net and that they talked about at the seminar.

Then it was the individual consults. The persons with less co-morbidities and best health were the ones he saw first, because he then he would be able to spend more time on the ones with more health risks. Guess who was last in line? Me........

He said that people who had had diabetes for a long time and been on insulin for a long period had a greater chance of their diabetes not going into remission after the surgery. However, it would be more manageable and the chances of cutting out insulin was good. He said that they want my A1C (average blood sugar over 3 months) to be no more that 8%. It was 11% last November which is very high.

That's why I'm now dieting....uggg the bad D-word. I'm not counting calories and not trying to lose weight, but counting carbs and trying to lower my sugars. This is not low-card diet, but carb controlled. My dietician gave me a mealplan..or rather a plan with so and so many carb choices, fat choices, protein choices and so on. I track on Sparkspeople again. The sugars are not quite there yet..especially in the morning...daytime is good. Much better than in a long time.

The dietician came to me while I was waiting for dr Pitt and she went through the usual stuff. I came with what I knew about the food before and after surgery. I also mentioned that I have regular contact with a local dietician and showed her the diabetes mealplan with the dietician's name on. I want them to know that I have my "own" dietician who will follow me up after surgery.

The trip to Thunder Bay was so nice. Beautiful scenery all the way. We stayed two nights in Thunder Bay so we could relax and do some shopping.I haven't a clue as when the surgery might happen, but I hope that it will be sometimes between April and June. That would be perfect timing jobwise and life wise.

Finally my family doc got my reports from the sleep study and heart stress test ready for pick up. Almost a month after I asked for them. Now I have to fax them down (after takin copies). Fax and snail mail and follow up with phone calls.

Finally got appointment for consult.

Dec 18, 2008

I was wondering if they had forgotten me in Duluth. Today I got a phone call with appointment times. I have appointment with RN on January 14 and with doctor and dietitian early in the morning on the 15.

I had my psychological assessment on December 12 in Thunder Bay and that should be ready by the time I go to Duluth.

I just hope for a surgery date in April. But we'll see.

Busy November and new health concerns.

Nov 19, 2008

I have had lots of travelling and busy days behind me. November 6 I had a sleep study and the test showed that I have moderate sleep apnea. November 24 I have an appointment with the sleep doc and a treatment sleep study.

November 10 I had a nuclear heart stress test. 5 boring and 1 exhausting hour. Report show that I have Coronary Artery Disease. The is a narrowing of a couple of the major arteries of the heart. Just been put on betablockers.

November 11 (Happy Birthday, Mom) I had my follow up eyedoctor's appointment and it showed several fresh bleedings on my left eye. I knew about this since I actually could see the bleeding. My eye is filled with a thick white fog. Right eye is stable and holding up, thank God.

November 12 I went to Duluth for the Informative Seminar at St. Mary's. Crossing the border was interesting since I was still radioactive. That was detected and they found out that it came from me. The geigercounters went off, but they didn't make any hassle. Just asked: "Mam, have you had any medical procedure done lately?". Told about the heart test. I got my visa waiver in my Norwegian passport.

Hotel Sheraton was wonderful to bad we couldn't enjoy it fully since we arrived at 4pm and the seminar was at 5pm. The seminar didn't tell me anything new. I got a big manual/book and informed about the next steps. This was something I had to go through since attendance at a seminar is mandatory.

November 13 early in the morning we headed home. 7 hours drive. We stopped briefly in Thunder Bay. Friday back to work.

November 16 going to Thunder Bay again. November 17 I became a proud Canadian citizen. This was such a special moment for me. We went straight to the passport office and applied for my very first Canadian passport.

Yesterday I was back to work again.  I called a psychologist in Thunder Bay that was on the list from Duluth and got an appointment for assessment. Since I have another eyedoctor's appointment on December the 12 I decided to get assessment done the same day.

Duluth Clinic said that they were a bit back logged and if I want a "round robin" I may not be able to get in before January. It may seem like a long time, but time flies.

I have used up almost all my sick days, personal days and vacation so there is not many days left for me to take off before the new fiscal year starts April 1. I may decide to wait until then for economic reasons to have the surgery. But nothing is decided.

Still waiting for OHIP approval.

Sep 12, 2008

The application was received by OHIP August 7, 2008. They have since sent it back to my doctor asking for more information.  Among them is to get a sleep study.

The waiting time for sleep study in Thunder Bay is currently 20 months. Last week I was up in Thunder Bay for my Canadian Citizenship test which I passed with a perfect score...yaaaaaaaaayyyaaa. Soon very soon a proud Canadian.

I went to the sleep clinic and they sent me to Shopper`s Home Health Care to pick up a home sleep apnea screening kit.

At bedtime in my hotel room I hooked myself up to it and handed it in next morning. I had a good night sleep that night. They said they would download the results and send it to the sleep specialist and my family doctor. If I have sleep apnea I assume that I may be called in earlier for sleep study.

I will call my doctor again on Monday and see if they have heard anything. Everytime I phone OHIP they tell me to contact my doctor.

This Fall will be very busy. First of all I will go through the Citizenship ceremony and be a proud Canadian citizen. Then I hope that I will have my approval and go for my consult and so on. I pray that I will have the surgery this side of Christmas.
