He's amazing! Such a funny and personable guy! I'd suggest him to anyone that wants to have a good surgery experience! Him and his team are all very enthusiastic and supportive!!
I have been thinking having the lapband surgery for some time. Thought doing my research to alleviate my paranoia before going under the knife. To my surprise, the California Medical Board has no record of Dr. Horgan's practicing physician license. In addition, I contacted the American Board of Medical Specialties and they stated he is not a Board Certified Surgeon in the US!!?? Has anyone else bothered to check on this?? I hope you do...........
Dr. Horgan and his staff have one of the most informative seminars I have ever been to! I am 4 years post op and have worked for 2 Lap Band surgeons over the years. Dr. Horgan is intelligent, funny and truly cares about his patients and their outcome with the Lap Band. He is very strict and specific about the Pre-op and Post-op diet, because he wants to make sure that you are prepared and safe for surgery and that you can be compliant with the \"rules of the band\". I think he really helps to prepare his patients for a successful journey with the Band. Dr. Horgan is personable, straight forward and a fantastic surgeon! We are so lucky to have him in San Diego now!
I saw Dr. Horgan in San Diego, where he's now located.rnrnI was on a waiting list for 3 months, went to a seminar, then waited two more weeks for an appt.rnrnDr. Horgan was rude, rushed, and didn't seem the least bit interested in me or the medical records, and pictures I'd prepared for the appointment.rnrnI felt he was patriarcal, (I'm seeking a skilled surgeon, not a husband or father!), and he definitely belittled me in front of other staff (who were polite and efficient).rnrnHe also mentioned money/insurance several times; both during the seminar, and during our appointment, about how he was not making any money from doing the seminars or seeing patients initially.rnrnHe allowed me no options/input. One wonders if that would be the case were I paying the $16,500 up front, which he quoted in the seminar.rnrnHe might be an excellent surgeon; I will never know. I won't be going back; I wouldn't let him spay a cat, and in fact have had vets that have shown me more interest and concern.rnrnBut I must qualify the above as being MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE of Dr. Horgan. And an extremely unpleasant one it was...others may find him tolerable.

My first impression of Dr. Horgan was intelligent and funny. He really seems to enjoy what he does and had a great camaraderie with his fellows. He seemed like cool aces to me.
My impression of Dr. Horgan never changed over time. He is very thorough with his patients and almost cancelled my surgergy because of needing some additional tests ran because of my tiny hernia. We worked it out where I would maintain my surgery date but still got my tests in.
Dr. Horgan's office staff is something of a sensitive subject for me and I'd rather not comment.
The only thing I like the least about Dr. Horgan was his accent. It is a thick South American accent. I quickly got over this hurdle and understand him very clearly now.
Future patients should know that Dr. Horgan has no shame in being hard on his patients if they're not following the Lap-Band rules.
Dr. Horgan emphasized a strong aftercare program but his dietician took greater care in the details of that program.
Dr. Horgan wasn't who I spoke with as part of my consult. I spoke with one of his fellows who was VERY thorough with the risks.
I would rate Dr. Horgan a 9.5 out of 10.
Dr. Horgan's surgical competence and bedside manner are great. He always makes me laugh. I wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors and I will always owe a debt of gratitude to him.
My first impression of Dr Horgan was that he was so sensitive and caring that I was amazed at his experience. It has not changed. The staff is very caring and knowlegeable. Some are also patients. There were no compliant about Dr Horgan. He has a heavy argentinian accent but you quickly become accostumed to it. That he has trained most of the doctors in the midwest to do the lapband and why would you go to someone with limited experience and not go straight to the pro. He emphasized on every aspect of care, pre and post op. Gave details about diet, appts.
Yes, he has a TEAM that works with you through the whole process.Counselors, coachs, dietician. He explained the risk of the surgery and mentioned if that had occured to his patients. He was very open about things that occured when they first started doing the lapband and how they had improved the procedure. I would rate him and his partners a true 10. I think that surgical competance is my main concern since I had a bad experience in the past but it is wonderful to have both in a surgeon.
He seemed very nice and had an accent. Which I later found out he was from Argentina. I like his office staff very much they seem to be very helpful and his nurse (RN) is very personable and efficient. I have not had the opportunity to judge the Dr. yet.
I admit, I was a bit intimidated when I went in for my consult with Dr. Horgan, but he quickly made me laugh and feel at ease. Based upon the seminar, the consult, and the internet research that I've done, I have great confidence that this man knows what he's doing, and gives it to you straight, no false promises or "miracle cures." He fully intends for you to do your part after he puts in the band.
I have nothing but fabulous things to say about Michelle, Ryan and Nicole at the Surgery Center. They have all been SO extremely patient and helpful, answering all my questions and calling me back promptly when they have to get back to me with an answer, and I'm extremely greatful for that. I guess the only thing I wasn't happy with was the fact that they won't bill out for their 'on staff' psychologist, so I have to go see her at UIC, but that's small potatoes to me.
I have great faith that they will help me in any way possible to make sure this works for me. I've already received detailed information on after-care and what to expect. I can't wait until I'm approved!
