Elmer Valin

"I was, like alot of other people, surprised at how young he is/looks! He was very attentive to me and on my first visit asked me what I knew about the surgery. I shared what I knew from the internet and he showed me a tiny bottle and said that after surgery my stomach will be this size. He was very thorough in letting me know everything good/bad. I had to next go to Diana Rosa, the nutritionist and she was also very helpful and understanding. I next went to see Mark Gaynor, psychologist. He's a toughie! But I liked that. He almost seemed to purposely try to scare me - but I didn't budge because I knew that this is for me. Since he had RNY surgery, it was helpful to hear what he had to say. What I've learned is that "everyone is different" so what I'm told you have to take everyone's experience lightly as you may have different reactions, particularly with what foods you can/cannot handle, your moods, etc. I had the pre-op testing at St. Raphael's. Again, everyone at the hospital was very outgoing and nice. I had to wait a while in the registration area to get my blood drawn/chest x-rays so plan to hang out for an hour (you may get a good day though..). Then after that I went straight down to get the endoscopy. A nurse brought me to a changing room and discussed everything about the procedure. I then changed and then put me in a bed and got an IV going. People around me (who had the same thing) were snoozing away & snoring! Dr Valin came in and said i'd be doing that too (sorry to disappoint him but....I woke right up after the procedure). I did not feel a thing! I couldn't believe even Dr. Valin was doing the endoscopy (I thought it would be a technician). He rolled me into one of the procedure rooms and I noticed a small TV near me. He then sprayed this super-intense tasting Chloraseptic into my mouth and I swallowed. Kinda yucky but not where you feel you're going to throw up. He had to do it twice for me. Then I think I got knocked out and before I knew it, I heard him talking and taking something out of my mouth. Again, I didn't feel a thing. I hope surgery goes this well.... So far, I've been very pleased with all the people and the hospital. "
