WOO-HOO! I'VE FINALLY GOT AN ANGEL! I WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO DONNA CRANE, WHO KINDLY VOLUNTEERED TO BE MY ANGEL ALL THE WAY FROM GEORGIA. O.K. DONNA, SPRINKLE THE ANGEL DUST!

Melany - I know it is difficult to make the decision to have this surgery. and I am sure lots of folks have said that being obese carries its own very real risks. There is no doubt about that. Your wish to see your son grow up is at risk no matter what you do or don't do. I only know that the surgery has been a wonderful thing for me. I feel better, have more energy than I did 3 months ago. My back doesn't hurt even when I cook or wash dishes. I have been lucky not to have any complications. I will keep you in my heart and prayers as you make your journey. Love, Anndrea

Melany, I'm so glad to hear that you have decided to go through with the surgery. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you continue on your journey to the other side. Just think, soon you'll be a loser! And you will be running and playing and keeping up with that dear little child of yours! Good luck, hun, you'll do great!

Dear Melany, I had surgery 8/13/2001 and I also wa an insulin dependent diabetic (type II). Notice I said "was"? I haven't had insulin since the week of surgery. This surgery carries risks, but the risks of stroke, heart attack, etc. far outweighs the risks of surgery. My only regret is that I didn't do it 10 years ago when my children were younger. Give your child the chance to have some beautiful memories of having a mom that can really enjoy doing all the fun things. Yes, people die. But a lot more people live and the quality of life is so improved that it makes it worth the risk. I believe in the power of prayer and positive thinking. Surround yourself with positive people and don't look back. Every step you take towards this surgery is a step in the right direction. I will be praying for you.

Melany, I really know that feeling of total pre op panic. I had my surgery on August 29. I really knew I was going to die. I have 2 small children, and prior to surgery couldn't even go to the mall with them without being miserable....short of breath, in pain with constant back ache. I was always bitchy because I was so miserable. My BMI was exactly the same as yours. After almost 2 mos, I'm down 50 lbs. and am playing tennis again!!! I have had NO complications. I even enjoy all the flavors of protein. I did have the lap RNY. The panic you feel is normal. This surgery is like a life long fantasy come true. Last Sunday, after playing tennis (my girls were at the park playing on the swings and watching me), we went to the mall to buy Halloween costumes, went to the drug store to pick up a script, went grocery shopping, and I was in good humor the entire time!!! What a gift to give my family!! Good luck to you.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR PRAYERS AND WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT. AS I SAT HERE, TEARY-EYED, READING ALL OF YOUR POSTS AND E-MAILS, IT HAS FINALLY SUNK IN. I AM GOING TO HAVE THIS SURGERY ON WEDNESDAY SO THAT I CAN HAVE A BETTER LIFE. LIKE SOMEONE POSTED, I HAVE COME TOO FAR TO BACK OUT NOW. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE STILL TRYING TO GET TO THIS POINT. MY SON IS AT A VERY ACTIVE STAGE IN HIS LIFE AND I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN WITH HIM. ALSO, I DON'T WANT HIM TO PICK UP MY BAD EATING HABITS, THE WAY I PICKED THEM UP FROM MY PARENTS. I AM TRUSTING IN GOD THAT THINGS WILL TURN OUT GREAT. I KNOW THAT IT WAS JUST SATAN TRYING TO DISCOURAGE ME AND MAKE ME CANCEL THIS LIFE-SAVING SURGERY. I DON'T HAVE A SURGERY ANGEL, BUT IF ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW MY STATUS AFTER WEDNESDAY, THE HOSPITAL # IS 215-829-3000. MY WONDERFUL HUSBAND OR I WILL LET YOU KNOW THAT THINGS ARE FINE. THANK YOU ALL. MELANY
