Sandra, I am wishing you a successful, complication-free surgery and a smooth, quick recovery. I had my open RNY on 12/10/01 and can honestly say that I have NO regrets other than not having done this several years sooner. It is, without a doubt, the best thing I could have done for myself. God bless you as you begin your healthy new life.

Sorry to hear about your sister's attitude. My sister isn't so thrilled about the idea either. Don't get me wrong, she and I are best of friends but she does let me know how she feels (as do I:). She has recently lost quite a bit of weight on the Atkins diet. This is her third time losing a good amount of weight (60+ Pounds). She has gone off the diet the last couple of weeks and has gained about 12 pounds back. I told her about the family on 20/20 who had this surgery together. She said "I just need to get on the ball and use some self control". It really wasn't what she said but how she said it that made me feel I was taking the easy way out, not even trying to use some self-control. I told her even with the surgery I will have to use self-control to keep from getting sick or end up back in the hospital. She just didn't want to listen to that. I still love her but I'm with you, this is just one subject we should not discuss. Best of wishes to you and God Bless!

Sandra, I'm so sorry your sister is not only unsupportive about your decision but she sounds as if she is actively trying to sabetogue (sp) your efforts to be healthy. Remember, The National Institutes of Health acknowledge bariatric surgery as the most effective, long -term solution for major weight loss. Less than 5% of people are able to lose and maintain their weight loss by diet and exercise. I would love to be in that 5% of people but I've proven over and over and over again that I'm in the other 95%. Therefore I taking the next best recommended treatment for morbid obesity. We're not trying to 'be skinny'. We just want to live healthy. If folks have coronary heart disease they have coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty. Diabetics take insulin or have insulin pumps installed. You do what you have to to take care of your health. BRAVO Sandra, for taking the necessary steps to leading the fullest life possible. Lori
