It's been FIVE YEARS?!?!? Yes indeed it has. I've never regretted having the surgery ... my only regret is that I didn't have it done sooner. I'm still maintaining a weight of 145 lbs, and have recently met a fella who loves to cajun dance, so we go at least once a week and 'cut a rug'. I take for granted what I can do NOW vs. what I could do before surgery. When I see heavy people, I ache for them because I know the obstacles that they face every moment of every day. What do I eat? I eat what I want. I stay away from fried food and sugar most of the time, but if I want fried chicken or catfish, or an occasional Hershey Bar, I allow myself to eat it. I've brought carbonated drinks back into my daily routine ... Coke Zero tastes almost like the 'Real Thing' (more so than Diet Coke, in my humble opinion). My tummy size still dictates when I'm full. I can overeat, especially when I get overly hungry, and stuff my face without thinking of what is going inmy mouth. Drier foods (like baked chicken breast) tend to not sit well on my stomach, probably because of the lack of moisture and my not chewing it enough. Well, that's a 5 yr update. If anyone has questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Colleen p.s. a pleasant thing happened about a week ago ... i went for coffee and there was cake in the coffee room, which i looked at and passed up (it wasn't chocolate, lol). one of my new coworkers (she didn't know me 'when') said "that's how colleen stays so skinny, cuz she doesn't eat cake!" i had to laugh, and then told her why she had made my day ... i haven't drug out my 'fat' photo yet to show her ... not too sure i want to bring that thing to light.

I had my surgery in Oct 2001 ... Dr Mando with Renew in New Orleans performed the surgery. I weighed 270 at surgery time, and lost down to 135 lbs (I'm 5'6") Since that low weight, which i knew i couldn't maintain, I've leveled off between 145-150. I stay away from fried food, sugar, and carbonated beverages. I'm sooo much more active now, and things that were difficult for me when I was larger, are now much easier. Life has opened up for me since I've had the procedure. Whether it was my weight or my attitude about my size -- I guess I'll never know which kept me from living a fuller life.

1/12/03 Here I am, 15 months postop. I've lost 120 lbs and 99 inches. I was back on my feet after the GB surgery in about 10 days. I'm more active than ever, feel great, and the energy just seems to ooze out of me! Wish I had had WLS 10 years ago!

It's me again. Had to have Gallbladder surgery 10 days ago, but luckily it was handled via LAP. I'm slowly regaining my strength. My two cents -- For those of you who are considering WLS, talk to your doc about taking out the GB if your type WLS will increase your chances of gallstones forming. There were high odds that my GB surgery would have to be an 'open' procedure, due to adhesions from the RNY and/or stones in the common duct. Luckily neither required the open surgery. Aug 31, 2002 -- I've finally hit the century mark. 101 lbs gone in 10.5 months. I'd like to lose another 5-10 lbs -- mostly in my legs and tummy. I'm enjoying life more than ever, and give thanks every day for this self-actualizing surgery.
