Scarborough Hospital, Grace Division

"The staff were great although one nurse didn't have the knowledge of gastric band surgery and when giving me my crushed pills in apple sauce kept trying to give me large spoonfuls at a time"

Patrick Yau

"Very young - I'm 45 yrs (he's in his 30's) Should have grown up in the late 60's early 70's Very anti-establishment and anti- administration and Very pro-patient Has a sincere wish to help morbidly obese patients Put on an information seminar on different procedures available and which ones were covered or partially covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) Did this on a Saturday. How many Drs would do this ?!! He's very careful - I was initially going to be done in the clinic (outpatient) and after reviewing my health issues decided I'd be a better candidate for the hospital (overnight only) Staff were very friendly and helpful and understanding Nothing to dislike about Dr Yau - tells it like it is but in a nice way He will do whatever is the best for the patient. He's not in it just for the money. There's a very real need that he is filling. Aftercare very important to him. He is also very much a believer that the patient has to take responsibility for their health and that if there is any sign of problems it's their responsibility to contact him immediately. The aftercare is approx monthly unless more frequent appts are indicated. This is for the filling or adjustments of the Lap Band. He is very open about all the risks involved in general surgery. Undergoing a general anesthetic as well as the complications specific to the procedures he discussed at the seminar. At this point I would give him a 10/10. He was excellent during the consultation. Listened to what was being said and what wasn't being said. Was very honest with his concerns about existing health problems in relation to the surgery. I have MS and can experience an exacerbation as a result of the anesthetic. I have high cholesterol and tri-glycerides that is currently controlled by medication. I am what my GP has referred to as pre-diabetic. My fasting glucose last month was all over the map and she repeated it 4 times for comparison. From the consultation I would expect his bedside manner to be the same. As far as his surgical ability I have heard only positive comments but will judge for myself on July 20, 2004. I'm not trying to make him out as the Almighty Higher Power but at this point I have no concerns or negative comments to report. I'm a Registered Nurse and am accustomed to the arrogance most surgeons have. This man did not have this attitude. He was like a friendly neighbour. Not pretentious at all. It was like he was so comfortable with himself he didn't have anything to prove to anyone. This is not the average surgeon I have been around in the past. "
